Jets Remain Confident In Sam Darnold

Oct 27, 2020 9:02 AM

Adam Gase is backing Sam Darnold despite this past weekend's clunker against the Buffalo Bills.

"I just keep thinking, 'He's 23, none of this can be easy,'" Gase said. "He's a guy that did so much good in college and won a lot of football games. Things haven't always gone as smoothly as everybody always hopes when they get to the NFL."

The New York Jets remain winless and questions have arisen about Darnold's place in the team's long-term plans.

In five starts, Darnold has twice as many interceptions (six) as touchdown passes (three). His numbers have declined from last season in all the major statistical categories.

Sam Darnold: Trevor Lawrence Talk 'Out Of My Control'

Oct 22, 2020 5:56 PM

The New York Jets selected Sam Darnold third overall in 2018 but fans of the team already are eyeing the possibility of selecting Trevor Lawrence if they end up with the No. 1 pick in the 2021 draft.

"Yeah, you know, I mean, I have social media," Darnold said Thursday when asked about Lawrence. "I've seen some of the things, but ... Yeah, we've got a game to win this week and that's all we're worried about."

Darnold has struggled in his third season. He ranks 29th out of 30 qualifying quarterbacks in Total QBR (46.3).

"For me, it's out of my control," he said. "I'm here to do my best and help this team win games."

Jets On Pace For Worst Point Differential In NFL History

Oct 19, 2020 1:32 PM

The New York Jets are 0-6 and on pace for perhaps the worst season in NFL history.

The Jets have been outscored 185-75 in 2020, a point differential (-110) that is equal to the combined point differentials of the second-worst and third-worst teams.

New York is on pace to be outscored by 293 points this season, which would be the worst point differential in NFL history.

The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were outscored by 287 points.

Adam Gase 'Wasn't Happy' With Gregg Williams' Veiled Dig

Oct 19, 2020 9:56 AM

The New York Jets are winless and things may be crumbling from the inside.

Adam Gase wasn't happy that Gregg Williams, the team's defensive coordinator, took a veiled shot at the offense when speaking to the media on Friday.

Gase addressed the comments after New York's 24-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

"Yeah, I wasn't happy about it, but we talked about it," Gase said. "Right now, our players are doing such a good job as far as trying to get things righted. It's just that everything we say, it matters. He understood that we have to set the right example."

On Friday, Williams was prompted by a reporter who noted the Jets were allowing 32 points per game. The fiery defensive coordinator replied, "It's not a very good number -- and a lot of it's not all defensively."

Asked to elaborate, he said, "You'd have to figure it out."

Le'Veon Bell plans to sign with either the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs or Buffalo Bills.

Jets Would Find Tepid Interest If They Try To Trade Sam Darnold

Oct 13, 2020 1:45 PM

Rival executives believe the New York Jets would get very tepid offers for Sam Darnold if they attempt to trade him.

The Jets could end up with the No. 1 pick in 2021 with Trevor Lawrence presumably the pick despite taking Darnold in the first round in 2018.

"I don't think they'd get a [first-round pick] for Sam, but it also depends what he puts on tape the rest of the year," one general manager told ESPN. "The problem is, [Darnold] is struggling with his accuracy, his durability -- so they're in a tough spot. And if everyone knows the Jets are taking a quarterback, then they won't get as much back."

Another GM also predicted the Jets wouldn't get back a first-round pick for Darnold.

"The high-water mark would be a [second-round pick] for him," one GM said this weekend. "I think they could get a [fourth-round pick] for him, but if he finished positive for him, they might get a 2 for him. In college, he was a turnover machine. In the NFL, he has been a turnover machine. I just don't think he has the credentials to go for a 1."

The Arizona Cardinals cut ties with Josh Rosen after just one season when they ended up with the first overall pick and selected Kyler Murray. The Cardinals traded Rosen to the Miami Dolphins for a second rounder and fifth rounder.

Jets Trying To Trade Le'Veon Bell

Oct 13, 2020 12:50 PM

The New York Jets are trying to trade Le'Veon Bell, sources tell Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

“I know he’s frustrated that we haven’t won,” Adam Gase said Monday. “It wasn’t necessarily the plan of not targeting him in the past game, it just kind of ended up being that way with how they were they were playing us. So that’s what it is, I mean, just try to find ways to move the football that’s all we’re trying to do, and it doesn’t always go exactly as planned.”

Bell averaged a career-low 3.2 yards per carry after signing a four-year, $52.5 million deal last season. He has a guaranteed $8.5 million base salary for 2020.

The Jets tried to trade Bell at last year's trade deadline.

Adam Gase Open To Giving Up Playcalling Duties

Oct 13, 2020 9:03 AM

Adam Gase conceded Monday that it might be time for him to give up playcalling duties with the New York Jets.

"For the last four years, I've toyed with the idea every once in a while," said Gase, alluding to his time as a head coach with the Miami Dolphins as well. "I mean, I don't think I've ever been opposed to trying something to try to change things up. I'd say everything is on the table at this point."

Despite an 0-5 start, and a 7-14 overall record, Gase has received public support from the Jets' hierarchy.

"I'm considering everything," he said. "I'm just looking at everything and trying to figure out whatever can help us turn things in the right direction. I'll be all for that."
