Texans 'Working Hard' To Sign Deshaun Watson To Extension

Jul 31, 2020 2:55 PM

Bill O'Brien revealed on Friday that the Houston Texans are "working hard" to sign Deshaun Watson to a long-term extension.

Watson made less than $3.8 million in 2019, which was just 4.88% of the Texans' cap. He is scheduled to make $4.4 million during the 2020 season.

"Deshaun is a great player, an even better person, and we want him here for a long time," O'Brien said. "... I know that we're working hard. We're not going to really talk about it in the media, but obviously we feel so strongly about him and the future of him in this offense, in this organization, and we want him here for a long time."

Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year, $503 million extension earlier this month as a fellow member of the 2017 draft class.

J.J. Watt: 'We Want To Play' But Need Answers

Jul 17, 2020 9:10 AM

J.J. Watt says the NFL's players want to play football this season, but they need some clarification from the league before camps open.

Rookies for the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to report to camp on Monday for COVID-19 testing and then the onboarding process, according to a source.

"In the interest of having everyone on the same page in terms of what we know and don’t know at this time, here are a few things I’ve learned being on four NFLPA calls in the last two weeks with hundreds of other players," Watt wrote on Twitter.

"Keep in mind our rookies are scheduled to report in 48 hrs."

Some of Watt's questions included questions about preseason games, the testing schedule, what happens if the player tests positive and what camps will look like.

J.J. Watt Says It's Too Early To Make Call On Playing

Jul 9, 2020 9:26 AM

J.J. Watt says it's still too early for players to make a decision on whether they'll play this season given the unknowns that remain with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Houston Texans are scheduled to report to training camp July 25.

"I've been on the NFLPA calls the last couple times we've had them," Watt said. "I don't think we're anywhere ... I don't think we're at a point yet where people are making that decision because we don't have enough information yet to be making decisions like that. So I think that it's a very fluid process, and I think it keeps coming up. Obviously ... the report date gets closer and closer. But as of right now, we really don't have enough information to make a decision like that, I would say."

Watt said he hoped the NFL was looking at the way the other leagues are operating in their attempts to return to play.

"We're in uncharted territory," Watt said. "Everybody is. So whether it's the NBA, whether it's the MLB, whether it's the NWSL, whoever it is. We're in uncharted waters right now. So everybody should be looking and watching and observing what everybody else is doing to see what works, what doesn't work and needs to be tweaked because we're all kind of going through this thing together.

"Listen, everybody wants sports. We all want sports. But we also all want it to be as safe as possible. So learning from other people's experiences and trying to tweak it and make it as best as possible by the time we get around to it is a very important [thing] to do. So obviously we're hoping that we can learn from those and get better and we're hoping that they have success with theirs because we all want to watch sports. We just want to make sure it's safe."

Deshaun Watson Prefers Shorter Deal When He Does One

Jul 7, 2020 7:58 AM

With Patrick Mahomes getting a 10-year, $477 million deal from the Kansas City Chiefs, Deshaun Watson is among those next in line for a new contract.

Nothing is imminent between Watson and the Houston Texans, but his next deal will likely look very different.

The quarterback isn't interested in a contract that long, giving him flexibility and a chance at a third deal sooner.
