Andre Johnson Willing To Take Pay Cut To Stay With Texans

Dec 26, 2014 12:51 PM

Andre Johnson is open to taking a pay cut to remain with the Houston Texans in 2015.

Johnson was interested in a trade last offseason.

"Nobody wants to hear that," said Johnson, when asked if he's willing to reduce his pay, per The Chronicle's Brian T. Smith. "But it's the nature of the business. I've seen it happen, heard it happen, had it happen to friends of mine. I understand that."

Johnson's uncle and longtime advisor, Andre Melton, said the wideout, set to make $10.5 million guaranteed in 2015 with a $16.1 salary-cap hit, would rework his contract if necessary.

"We understand it's a business and we're willing to deal with that," Melton said. "And Andre doesn't mind having a pay cut."

Ryan Mallett Prefers To Re-Sign With Texans

Dec 20, 2014 6:21 PM

Ryan Mallett would like to remain with the Houston Texans next season.

Mallett will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

“Yeah. Of course. I like it here. I love the system,” Mallett said. “But it’s not the time of the year to discuss that. So we’re still in season; we’re focused on the Ravens.”

Mallett is hoping to be healthy enough to get in a good offseason of work.

“I’m attacking [the rehab] every morning so we’ll see how it goes. There’s no timetable. Day-to-day. We’ll see how it feels every day,” Mallett said.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Out For Season With Fractured In Leg

Dec 16, 2014 10:54 AM

Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a fracture in his leg in Sunday's loss to the Colts and will need season-ending surgery, a source confirmed to ESPN.com.

"I felt for him," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "I felt for him because he knew right away that it was injured, his leg was injured, and I felt bad for him. He put a lot in for this week."

Fitzpatrick suffered the injury after a 2-yard rush on a 2nd-and-6 play early in the second quarter. He was carted off the field with an air cast on his leg.

"I just saw him take off as he's done so many times," Texans left tackle Duane Brown said. "(It) looked like a regular tackle. He tried to get up and sat back down -- that's when I kind of knew there was something up."

Jadeveon Clowney Undergoes Microfracture Surgery

Dec 10, 2014 5:11 PM

Jadeveon Clowney underwent microfracture surgery on his injured knee.

Clowney is expected to miss nine months.

The 21-year-old Clowney had knee surgery in September. Per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the September surgery was performed on Clowney’s cartilage and his lateral meniscus. According to McClain, Texans G.M. Rick Smith indicated the team knew microfracture surgery — which addresses cartilage damage — was potentially on table at some point.

Clowney was the No. 1 overall pick last May by the Houston Texans.

J.J. Watt: I'll Let All Of You Worry About MVP

Dec 9, 2014 10:06 AM

J.J. Watt had three more sacks on Sunday as he continues to make his case for MVP.

Watt has 82.5 total quarterback disruptions this seasons, ahead of Von Miller with 64.0 and Justin Houston with 63.0.

“Whoever you pick I’m sure will be deserving,” Watt told Peter King from Houston. “The way I look at it is, I’ll worry about what happens on the field. And I’ll let all of you worry about the MVP.”

“If all positions were created equal, J.J. Watt’s the best player in football by a mile, and it isn’t close,” said Neil Hornsby, the founder of Pro Football Focus, which judges every player on every snap.

Aaron Schatz, the president of the long-running football analytics group Football Outsiders, agreed: “Watt is by far the best player as his position compared to the average of his position.”

You always want it to turn out OK. I want things to work out here."
