Buccaneers Know Which QB Will Start, Won't Reveal

Sep 26, 2018 9:01 AM

Dirk Koetter knows which quarterback will start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4, but he won't reveal the decision yet.

Ryan Fitzpatrick struggled in the first half against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, but nearly led the Buccaneers to a comeback win. Jameis Winston is back with the team after serving a three-game suspension.

"I know there's a lot of interest in the quarterback thing," Koetter said. "I did talk to both Jameis and Fitz and it was great to see Jameis back in the building. He was here early and working hard. We're glad to have him. [It's] a short week. He assured me that he's ready to go, which I don't doubt for a minute that he's been working hard. So we both know what we're going to do.

"I hope everyone can appreciate that it doesn't do us any good to tell our opponents what we're going to do. So that will work itself out as the week goes on. But we do have a plan and both guys are aware of it."

Dirk Koetter Mum On Starting Quarterback For Week 4

Sep 25, 2018 8:39 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't ready to name a starting quarterback for Week 4.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has played well overall during Jameis Winston's three-game suspension.

"Let's see what the injury report [says when it] comes back," Dirk Koetter said. "Any time we have these games, it's not always obvious how the guys are going to come in the next day and come in on Wednesday. Let's see what happens. I'd love to get a chance to talk to Jameis face-to-face before I tell the rest of the world."

The Buccaneers (2-1) will face the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick is 78-for-111 (70.3%) for 1,230 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

DeSean Jackson On Ryan Fitzpatrick: 'You Can't Take The Hot Man Out'

Sep 18, 2018 8:47 AM

DeSean Jackson isn't among those that believe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a quarterback controversy.

Jackson believes Ryan Fitzpatrick should be the team's quarterback going forward, even when Jameis Winston returns from suspension.

"He's been on fire right now," Jackson told the NFL Network. "With the way the team is rallying behind him and just playing lights-out football, you have to kind of honor it. You can't take the hot man out. You got the hot fire right now. It's like NBA Jam. We used to play NBA Jam -- whoever's got that hot fire shot, you got to keep shooting, man.

"It's not my decision but I'm sure [coach] Dirk [Koetter] and [offensive coordinator Todd] Monken and the guys that make those calls, they'll make sure they stay on fire until that fire is out."

The Buccaneers are 2-0 and Fitzpatrick currently leads the NFL in passing yards (819) and passer rating among starting quarterbacks (151.5), and ranks second in touchdown passes (eight) and third in completion percentage (78.7).

Buccaneers May Not Start Jameis Winston After Suspension

Sep 1, 2018 7:50 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won't commit to Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback in Week 4 when he returns from his three-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

"I don't think it's fair to say right now that he's going to be the guy," general manager Jason Licht said.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will begin the season as Tampa Bay's starter. He won two of three starts last season while Winston was recovering from a shoulder injury.

Licht cited the short week in Week 4 and momentum as factors that could influence the decision.

"[If] Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Griffin, whoever it is, is playing lights out, I don't think it's fair right now just to say, 'Yes, automatically, [Jameis] is going to be the guy,'" Licht said. "Now, he may be. Dirk and I -- Dirk in particular -- he's got some time to think about that."
