K.J. Wright Says Geno Smith Should Start For Seahawks

Jun 30, 2022 7:53 AM

The Seattle Seahawks continue to be linked to Baker Mayfield, but less than a month away from training camp they still have just Geno Smith and Drew Lock at quarterback.

That's fine with K.J. Wright, who believes Smith should be the starter for the Seahawks in 2022.

"I'll tell you not Baker Mayfield," Wright told I Am Athlete Tonight on SiriusXM. "Not Drew Lock. We ain't gonna play those games. I'm team Geno all day."

Smith has been with the Seahawks for two seasons now, and he played in four games with three starts last year when Russell Wilson was hurt.

"Geno was good," Wright said.

"He was scout team quarterback. The dude has a cannon for an arm. He's intellectual, you know, having those two-minute drills during practice throughout the week, the man can play. Just trust him, just trust Geno. And what I said was whoever you decide to be your starting quarterback, the other guy has got to leave. You cannot have both those guys in the building throughout the season. Because what's gonna happen? Let's say game three or four they're not playing as well. What are the fans gonna do? ... 'Put the backup in.' And so to hell with all that, whoever's the starting quarterback, the other guy, you've got to trade him or cut him."

Pete Carroll Hopeful Seahawks, DK Metcalf Can Reach Deal

Jun 10, 2022 8:36 AM

The Seattle Seahawks remain optimistic about getting a long-term deal done with DK Metcalf.

Metcalf, who is in line for a huge extension, did not attend this week's minicamp.

"A decision that he had to make," Pete Carroll said of the wide receiver's absence. "We missed him. He had done a nice job of contributing, being a part of everything we had done and then he just is not here. So I can't say much about for what he hasn't done here, but we'd love to have him with us."

The Seahawks deemed Metcalf's absence from minicamp unexcused, which means he's subject to fines of more than $93,000 for missing all three days.

D.K. Metcalf's Absence At Minicamp Unexcused

Jun 8, 2022 8:17 AM

D.K. Metcalf was not present Tuesday for the start of the Seattle Seahawks' three-day mandatory minicamp.

Metcalf's absence is unexcused, according to sources, meaning he's subject to team fines that would total more than $93,000 if he were to miss all three days.

The wide receiver is seeking an extension to his rookie contract and also is recovering from surgery for the foot injury he played through for much of last season.
