Niners Agree To Terms With Alex Smith

Jun 9, 2014 10:48 AM

FOXSports.com has learned that the 49ers have agreed to terms with their top pick, and the top overall selection, Utah quarterback Alex Smith. The deal exceeds the total the Giants gave to Eli Manning, last year's No. 1 pick. Smith's six-year contract is for $50 million and includes $24 million in bonus money, the most guaranteed money given to a rookie in the history of the NFL. The signing of Smith is significant, as nearly every other draft pick has been waiting for the No. 1 pick's deal to get done in order to base their deals upon that contract. Smith is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Niners this year ahead of last year's starter Tim Rattay and was signed to be the cornerstone for the next generation of 49ers football.

Engelberger For Middlebrooks Trade Being Finalized

Oct 17, 2014 9:50 PM

The Denver Broncos called defensive end John Engelberger and his agent, Robert Lattinville, to inform him they are trying to finalize a trade in which Engelberger goes to the Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers receive cornerback Willie Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks, a former 49ers first-round pick, has been shopped in trade conversations for the past couple of months. There was some interest by the Miami Dolphins, but the 49ers heated up their interest in the past couple of days. Middlebrooks, 26, started only two games during his four seasons with the Broncos. He's a big corner at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, and is expected to fit in as the third corner in the 49ers 3-4 defense. In acquiring Engelberger, the Broncos retain the public relations notion that they weren't unloading Middlebrooks as a disappointing draft choice. He was the 24th choice in the first round. His contract voided after this season and is scheduled to be a free agent. Engelberger joins 16 other defensive linemen in Denver, but he comes to the team with talent. A former second-round choice who was the 35th pick in the 2000 draft, Engelberger started 58 of 78 games. The 49ers' switch to the 3-4 didn't fit Engelberger's abilities because he's a pure 4-3 defensive end.

Niners Optimistic #1 Pick QB Smith Will Be In Camp

Sep 6, 2014 4:11 PM

The #1 selection out of Utah, quarterback Alex Smith might miss part of his first NFL training camp while negotiating the terms of his contract. The San Francisco 49ers are hoping it wont come to that. Monday afternoon, 49ers director of football operations Paraag Marathe, the team's chief negotiator, said he remains optimistic, though an agreement still has not been reached with the start of camp only 17 days away. "I'm operating under the assumption he'll be there for the first day of camp," Marathe said during a telephone interview Monday.
