The New York Jets have hired Robert Saleh as head coach.

Saleh had been defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. 

Saleh quickly became the frontrunner for the Jets and flew to New Jersey on Tuesday for a second interview. 

Saleh is expected to take 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him as his offensive coordinator.

The New York Jets are a potential landing spot for Doug Pederson, who was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.

The oddsmakers at SportsLine quickly installed Pederson as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Jets.

The three candidates with the highest odds are Pederson (+400), Brandon Staley (+600) and Eric Bieniemy (+700).

With the Seattle Seahawks losing to the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday afternoon, the New York Jets have secured the 23rd overall pick.

The Jets will receive the pick as a result of the Jamal Adams trade before the season.

New York will also pick second overall.

New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson says the team will hire a coach who can galvanize the entire roster.

"I don't much like the term 'CEO,' but it does describe what we're looking for," Johnson said. "We want a head coach that coaches the entire team and his staff. You don't have to be offensive, you don't have to be defensive. This is a coach for the entire team. That's very important to us looking forward."

New York hired Adam Gase two years ago with a focus on the offense and quarterback Sam Darnold.

Johnson predicted a "broad and deep" search that could take up to a few weeks.

The New York Jets have officially parted ways with Adam Gase.

In two seasons as New York's head coach, Gase went 9-23.
