"Steve is a bright defensive mind with a lot of coaching experience and success in our league," Reid said in a statement. "I know him well from our time together in Philadelphia and I feel that his leadership skills and teaching abilities, combined with his scheme, will be a great fit for our team as we move forward."

Chiefs Fire Defensive Coordinator Bob Dutton

Jan 23, 2019 8:12 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs have fired defensive coordinator Bob Dutton, two days after the team lost in the AFC Championship Game.

The New England Patriots won the coin toss in overtime of that game and the defense couldn't keep Tom Brady and the Patriots out of the end zone. The Chiefs never touched the ball.

Sutton has worked as Kansas City's defensive coordinator since 2013, when the Chiefs brought in Andy Reid as their head coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs could make changes to their defensive staff.

Andy Reid wouldn't discuss the possibility on Monday, but changes could even include defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.

"I never talk about that," Reid said. "It's something I go back and look at everything."

The Chiefs finished near the bottom of the league in passing yards allowed (273.4 yards per game, 31st in the NFL), but were better in terms of opposing passer rating (92.7, 12th in the NFL).

Partick Mahomes Could Land First $200M Deal In 2020

Jan 20, 2019 9:41 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to extend Patrick Mahomes' contract after next season, according to league sources.

It would be the first time the MVP candidate is eligible for an extension and he could receive the NFL's first $200 million contract.

However, some issues will have to be addressed -- some surrounding the collective bargaining agreement that would have only two seasons remaining, and some involving the two years that Mahomes would have left on his current contract, including the fifth-year option that Kansas City undoubtedly would exercise.

Bears Won't Rule Out Pursuing Kareem Hunt

Jan 15, 2019 8:20 AM

The Chicago Bears have left open the possibility of pursuing Kareem Hunt in free agency.

Hunt is on the Commissioner Exempt List and would need to be reinstated before he could sign with any team.

The Kansas City Chiefs released Hunt on Dec. 1 after video surfaced of the running back shoving and kicking a woman in the hallway of his Cleveland residence.

Matt Nagy and Hunt have a relationship that dates back to Kansas City, where Nagy served as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator during Hunt's rookie year in 2017.

"I talked to Kareem, completely wanting to know how he's doing," Nagy said. "We had a good conversation. Here's a kid that I spent a year coaching on offense. It's a tough situation. I wanted to see ... making sure that he's OK but understanding, too, the situation that happened is unfortunate for everybody. He knows that.

"The only thing I cared about when I talked to him was literally his personal life, how he's doing. It was a good conversation. He sounded good. But that's it. The other stuff, that's not where it's at. There's more to it than the football, so we talked strictly on that."
