Sep 16, 2014 12:29 AM

Peyton Manning was sorry to see Edgerrin James leave the Colts, but he's got an idea about how to bolster the running game. "Everybody has been asking how the running game is going to be this year. I've told them I'm going to try to get involved in the running game more myself," the two-time MVP joked Thursday. The not-so-nimble Manning said the scheme "might catch the defenses off guard."

The Baltimore Ravens traded a conditional 2007 draft pick for Indianapolis Colts safety Gerome Sapp. The Ravens hope the move creates competition at free safety with rookie Dawan Landry. "It was just an opportunity presented to us that allows us to upgrade our football team," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "He knows the system and he won't be penalized by not being here. He gets a chance to start fresh."

Shaun King, a starter at Tampa Bay when Tony Dungy was the coach there, signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts on Friday. King, who did not play in the NFL last season, joined the Detroit Lions in March and was released on Wednesday. He will try to make the Colts as Peyton Manning's backup. "We just think Shaun will add to our quarterback situation," said Dungy, now the Colts' coach. "He's an experienced guy who has played in a lot of big games and won. I think he's going to be a good fit for our system and what we do."
