Edwards Makes Good On Tuition Promise

Oct 16, 2014 4:18 AM

Braylon Edwards has made good on a promise he made a few years ago by sending 100 Cleveland-area students to college. The Jets wide receiver tweeted Thursday that "as the 2nd most hated man in Clev & a man of my word," he was honoring his commitment to pay for the students' college tuitions if they reached certain academic goals. Edwards is giving about $1 million to the students from the ADVANCE 100 program, established by the receiver’s foundation while he was playing in Cleveland. "Guys, enjoy and embrace your new beginnings," Edwards tweeted, "and remember your promise to me, to reach back & help someone else along the way."

It will take place next month at the University of Texas, wide receiver Josh Cribbs informed The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Former Longhorns star McCoy, who brought together teammates for camps at his alma mater in April and two weeks ago at Baldwin-Wallace College in suburban Berea, has scheduled the third "Camp Colt" for June 9-11.

Browns 'Won't Pursue' Kolb

Oct 1, 2014 1:29 PM

Despite a rumor to the contrary, the Browns are unlikely to pursue trading for Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb. Michael Lombardi of The NFL Network kick-started the Kolb-to-Cleveland talk. "I'm going to go Cleveland [if I'm the Eagles]," Lombardi said. "I'm not buying the Colt McCoy love affair going on in Cleveland. I don't know how you can have the love affair. I think with the extra pick they got from Atlanta, that first-rounder, it's gonna be hard to beat them in a poker game." Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer cited a source on Saturday that says the "Browns won't pursue" Kolb.

Cleveland A Potential Destination For Kolb?

Oct 1, 2014 1:25 PM

Michael Lombardi of NFL.com writes that Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb could potentially end up in Cleveland with the Browns. Kolb has already been linked to the Cardinals, Seahawks and the 49ers this offseason even though trades can't currently be completed or even discussed during the lockout. "I'm not buying the Colt McCoy love affair going on in Cleveland," Lombardi said Thursday on KTAR-AM in Phoenix. "I don't know how you can have the love affair. I know he's played well, but they managed him in the game, and there were some moments where he really didn't play as well." The Plain Dealer later cited a league source in reporting that the Browns won't pursue Kolb, but Lombardi pointed out Thursday that the team has plenty of draft picks. "It's hard to watch tape on Kevin Kolb and think he's worth a first-round pick," Lombardi said. "So it's going to require somebody selling him in the building, and somebody has to know him."

Shurmur Touts Trade As 'One Of The Greatest' In Draft History

May 19, 2014 7:55 PM

Browns coach Pat Shurmur told the audience at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club on Monday in Canton that his team's draft trade with the Falcons was one of best ever. Cleveland acquired five picks for the No. 6 overall pick in last month's NFL Draft. "I think we did great," Shurmur said. "But we obviously started off the draft by making a historic trade, probably one of the greatest trades in draft history, when we traded with Atlanta -- our sixth pick to get to (No.) 27, eventually up to (No.) 21 -- because we felt like we needed help in areas and based on the talent, based on what other teams around us were going to do and based on what we needed, we felt like that was the perfect thing to do." The Browns packaged the 27th overall pick acquired from Atlanta with the 70th overall pick to trade up to No. 21 to draft Baylor defensive lineman Phil Taylor.

Hillis Hopes To Defy Madden NFL 'Curse'

Jul 24, 2014 6:24 PM

Browns running back Peyton Hillis will be featured on the cover of Madden NFL 2012 and he plans to avoid the video game's long-standing curse. Bad seasons and bad injuries have befallen the players on the Madden cover. They have stumbled upon misfortune during the season of their cover shots. "I don't believe in curses," Hillis said. "I could get hurt next year, but I don't believe it has anything to do with the curse," he added. "I'm a Christian man and I don't believe anything could be put in front of me that God can't take away. I would love to prove everyone wrong and have an exceptional year and not get hurt."

Kolb Unlikely To End Up With Browns

Sep 30, 2014 11:38 PM

The Browns might be one of the many teams in the market for a quarterback, but the possibility of acquiring Kevin Kolb from the Eagles appears unlikely. Cleveland does have Colt McCoy. Browns general manager Tom Heckert was the GM with the Eagles when Kolb was drafted. "I think the odds of that are zero," the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi said. "I think this team has committed to Colt McCoy at least for 2011 ... I think they are hoping they will develop McCoy into an elite quarterback over time. I don’t think Kolb is the answer here."

Holmgren Calls Trade Of Sixth Pick 'Right Thing' For Browns

Oct 1, 2014 2:14 PM

Browns president Mike Holmgren says the trade of the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft was "the right thing" for the team. "It was absolutely the right thing to do for our team at this particular time," Holmgren said. "The trade was kind of an amazing trade when you count it up. Next year we've got a one and a four and it's what we needed." Cleveland traded the sixth pick in the first round to Atlanta for five picks: their first-round choice (27th) plus their second- and fourth-rounders this year and their first- and fourth-round choices in 2012. The Browns then traded up from No. 27 to No. 21 with Kansas City, selecting Baylor defensive tackle Phil Taylor.
