Panthers Will Listen To Trade Offers For Cam Newton

Dec 8, 2019 11:54 AM

The Carolina Panthers will listen to offers for Cam Newton, who is due just $18.6 million for the 2019 season.

The NFL has seen a number of trades of quarterbacks during the middle of their career such as when the Kanas City Chiefs traded Alex Smith to Washington for a third rounder and starting cornerback Kendall Fuller. The Minnesota Vikings traded a first and fourth rounder for Sam Bradford.

The Panthers, however, haven't ruled out keeping Newton.

David Tepper Could Hire Steelers' Execs To Run Front Office

Dec 8, 2019 11:27 AM

David Tepper could consider hiring front office executives from the Pittsburgh Steelers to run the Carolina Panthers.

The contract of Kevin Colbert is up after this season while Omar Khan is also a potential target.

Tepper was previously a minority owner of the Steelers and is in the process of selling his interest.

Tepper knows both Colbert and Khan and has worked with them. Colbert owns a home in Hilton Head, South Carolina approximately three hours from where the Panthers train.

Tepper did not fire general manager Marty Hurney, but he said nothing to ensure that Hurney would remain with the organization long-term.

Shaq Thompson, Panthers Agree To Four-Year, $54.2M Extension

Dec 7, 2019 3:52 PM

The Carolina Panthers and Shaq Thompson have agreed to a four-year, $54.2 million contract extension. The deal has $28 million in guaranteed money.

"It means everything," Thompson told Panthers.com. "What this organization has done for me and my family, it's just tremendous. Now it's time to go to Atlanta and go get this game.

"This organization really waited to see what I could become," he added. "They understood when I was a rookie that I could come in and learn behind TD [Thomas Davis] and Luke [Kuechly] and A.J. [Klein]. That allowed me to learn the game and develop a lot more. From college to the NFL -- those first two years for me everything was happening really fast. Now the game has slowed down for me. They allowed me to learn and develop. It's a blessing."

Cam Newton To Undergo Foot Surgery

Dec 4, 2019 11:37 AM

Cam Newton will undergo surgery on his left foot.

Newton reaggravated the Lisfranc injury in a Week 2 loss and hasn't played since.

Newton visited with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson last month, and the decision at that time was he would not have surgery.

Newton's injury raised speculation that his future with the Carolina Panthers could be over, but David Tepper said three weeks ago and reiterated on Tuesday that no decision has been made and wouldn't be made until Newton was healthy.

David Tepper Wants To Put His Stamp On Football Side

Dec 4, 2019 11:08 AM

The Carolina Panthers fired Ron Rivera with four games left in the season.

Rivera went 76-63-1 as the team's head coach with four playoff appearances.

David Tepper explained the decision and said he wants to put his stamp on the football side for the Panthers.

"Quite frankly, our season is ... not over but as far as making the playoffs [it's over]," Tepper said. "I could make the change now. I could make it later. There are competitive reasons why I wanted to make sure we are out there looking at all personnel possible for the future. I don't want to in any way, shape or form didn't want to be having inquiries where Ron didn't know what I was doing. I don't want to be doing things not up front. It's just not who I am. I'd rather be straight up and honest. If I'm going to make a change, I'm going to take a change. Not to get a competitive disadvantage over other teams, if I need to talk to people, I want to talk to them and I want to talk to them in a straightforward and honest way."

The Panthers went to the Super Bowl 50 under Rivera.

"Look, a very hard move," Tepper said. "Ron Rivera, besides being a good coach, is one of the finest men I have ever met in my life. I have to say that upfront. Look, I came here two years ago. I wanted to show patience on the football side to see how it was going. On the business side, we made vast and sweeping changes and I didn't want to make those vast and sweeping changes on the football side. I wanted to take time and patience to see what could go and how it could go. I just thought it was time given the way things have gone the last two seasons to put my stamp on this organization on the football side as we've done on the business side of the organization. I think as much respect as I have for Ron, I think a change was appropriate to build things the way I want things to be built."

Panthers Fire Ron Rivera, Likely To Retain Front Office

Dec 4, 2019 11:05 AM

The Carolina Panthers have fired Ron Rivera as head coach.

Perry Fewell has been named interim head coach.

"I believe this is the best decision for the long-term success of our team," David Tepper said in a statement. "I have a great deal of respect for Ron and the contributions he has made to this franchise and to this community. I wish him the best. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers."

Tepper added that he planned to add executives to "complement our current football staff," likely meaning that general manager Marty Hurney will remain in his position.

"We are going to take a comprehensive and thorough review of our football operation to make sure we are structured for long-term sustained success," Tepper said. "Our vision is to find the right mix of old-school discipline and toughness with modern and innovative processes. We will consider a wide range of football executives to complement our current football staff. One change that we will implement is hiring an assistant general manager and vice president of football operations. We all must recognize that this is the first step in a process, but we are committed to building and maintaining a championship culture for our team and our fans."
