Panthers Acknowledge Possibility Cam Newton Could Sit In 2019

Jan 16, 2019 8:29 AM

The Carolina Panthers are keeping all options open as Cam Newton deals with a sore right shoulder.

David Tepper, Carolina's owner, included the possibility of not having Newton available next season.

"If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that's what it took, an extra year, why wouldn't you do [that]?'" Tepper said.

"Now we would have to do other things, right? We'd have to go out and get another quarterback. If you could find me some more cap space I'd appreciate that."

Newton was shut down the final two games of the season when it became apparent the strength in his throwing shoulder, which was surgically repaired prior to the 2017 season, was hampering his effectiveness.

Thomas Davis Says Panthers Won't Re-Sign Him

Jan 10, 2019 8:28 AM

Thomas Davis plans to play at least one more season, but it won't be with the Carolina Panthers.

Davis, 35, announced via social media that the Panthers informed him they were going in "a different direction at the linebacker position" and would not be re-signing him.

"Carolina is going to always be home for me and my family, but I'm not retiring,'' said Davis, selected by Carolina out of Georgia with the 14th pick of the 2005 draft. "I feel like I have way too much football left in me to walk away from the game right now, so I want to keep playing. I'm going to keep playing.

"Hopefully, someone is going to give me that opportunity."

NFL, NFLPA Claim Eric Reid Wasn't Targeted For Drug Tests

Jan 9, 2019 10:19 AM

An investigation conducted jointly by the NFL and NFLPA has determined there's no evidence Eric Reid was targeted for the drug testing program.

Reid claimed after a Dec. 17 loss to New Orleans that he'd been selected for testing for the seventh time since signing with Carolina in late September.

Reid implied he was targeted due to his collusion case against the NFL. Reid was the first player to join Colin Kaepernick in kneeling during the anthem.

"I guess there was something about some mathematician saying it's highly improbable, but definitely possible," Ron Rivera said after Reid said he was tested a seventh time. "But I'll say this: If my name came up that many times, I'd buy a lottery ticket."
