The Panthers have announced that John Fox will not return as the team's coach next season. Fox has spent nine years with Carolina, including the team's only Super Bowl appearance. Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement that he told Fox that he appreciates everything he has done, but that "it is time for both sides to move in different directions."

Andrew Luck Leaning Towards Remaining At Stanford

May 19, 2014 1:17 PM

Andrew Luck would be the consensus first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, should he decide to leave Stanford and declare. "If Andrew Luck had to make his decision today as to whether he would stay or go to the NFL, he'd say he was staying in school," says a Stanford source. Luck has not made a final decision and will face Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Monday. The source said he 'knew' Luck is currently leaning towards remaining at Stanford. "A lot can happen between now and Jan.15th," said the source, referring to the date underclassmen must declare themselves eligible. "There will be a lot of conversations still to come. And whenever he goes pro, he will be a fantastic NFL quarterback. But this is a kid who truly enjoys college." The source continued: "For a lot of guys who declare early, it's partly because the schoolwork is such a grind for them. It's not that way for Andrew." The Panthers own the top overall pick.

Panthers Lock Up No. 1 Pick In 2011 Draft

Aug 3, 2014 3:50 AM

The Panthers will pick first in next April's NFL Draft. Wins by Cincinnati and Denver allowed Carolina to clinch the league's worst record on Sunday even though they were idle after losing to Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The only other time the Panthers have had the No. 1 pick -- before their inaugural season in 1995 -- they traded it away for more picks.

Steve Smith Hasn't Decided If He Wants Out Of Carolina

Sep 25, 2014 11:02 AM

Steve Smith has sat down to speak with Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and put his house up for sale, but he hasn't decided if he truly wants out of Carolina. "As far as my contract, I'm getting ready for Pittsburgh and then Atlanta," Smith said on Tuesday of the team's final two games. "Then I will discuss with my wife and my children like I do everything else -- like I put my house on the market." He added his house has been for sale since June, long before the Panthers began their poor season. Smith is under contract through 2012, but it has been suggested he might want to be traded to a contender if the Panthers begin a long rebuilding process.

Panthers May Target Young Defensive Coach

Aug 3, 2014 3:46 AM

The Panthers are preparing to find long-term coach John Fox's successor after the season. Fox, 72-69, entered his ninth season with an expiring contract and there have been no indications he will be back. It's possible that Carolina will look for an established coach, but the Charlotte Observer writes that a young defensive guru is a strong option. Philadelphia's Sean McDermott, Cincinnati's Mike Zimmer and the New York Giants' Perry Fewell are among the defensive coordinators the Panthers could consider.

Panthers Sticking With Clausen As Starter

Oct 14, 2014 9:36 PM

The Panthers are sticking with rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Coach John Fox said Monday that Clausen "more than likely" will start Sunday against Arizona. "I don't think our struggles either [Sunday] or up to date have been all the quarterback position, because we've fielded a few of them," Fox said. "We'll evaluate that this week. We won't announce starters, but I don't see it changing moving forward." Clausen apologized to linebacker Jon Beason for the team's offensive woes following Sunday's loss, prompting an angry response from receiver Steve Smith. "You should apologize to the people in the huddle with you," Smith said. "He has a lot to learn. He ain't at Notre Dame anymore, that's for sure." Carolina is just 1-12 this season.

Clausen Looking To Win Games To Prevent Panthers From Drafting Luck

Sep 12, 2014 9:22 PM

Even though the Panthers are not assured of having the first overall pick, Jimmy Clausen is already being forced to look over his shoulder to Andrew Luck. Clausen is trying to lead the Panthers to as many wins as possible, which might prevent the team from being in position to draft Luck. ?I?m trying to do everything I can to do that,? he said. ?I?m trying to do everything I can to get us a victory, and that?s the only thing I can control is going out each day, trying to get better, get the team better and try to get a W on Sunday.?
