Jury Acquits Suggs

Aug 1, 2014 3:02 AM

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs will not see any jail time for an assault charge stemming from a playground incident in which Suggs and his brother David got into an altercation with childhood friend Jeryme Cook near basketball courts set up for a three-on-three tournament at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. It escalated to violence in a parking lot, where Suggs claimed he was hit over the head with an iron rod. "I wasn't shocked when I heard the verdict," Suggs said. "You all have watched me grow up here. I've never once been in trouble." "That used to be my best friend, so why -- unless he did something to me -- would I try to harm him?" Suggs said. "We spent the night at each other's houses. He walked one path and I walked another." You better believe there will be a civil suit following.

Deion Plans To Adopt Florida's High School Star RB

Oct 16, 2014 4:17 AM

Ravens cornerback Deion Sanders is planning to adopt Noel Devine, one of Florida's most highly-touted high school running backs. Devine's not just any running back; he had a two-game stretch last October in which he gained 35 yards per carry. Devine played at North Fort Myers (Fla.) High, the school from which Sanders graduated in 1985. Now Devine will be moving to Texas to play high school football at Prosper High School and live with Sanders. "The principal of my high school told me about him a couple of years ago," Sanders said. "Said the young man needed guidance. I didn't follow through then, but was back in my hometown for a Jevon Kearse event recently. Three more people told me about Noel and his struggles. I've spent some time with the young man, and he needs direction. He doesn't have parents; they died. God put this young man in my heart. This is not about sports. This is about a kid's life."

Heap Signs A Six-Year Extension

Oct 15, 2014 12:51 PM

The Ravens announced that Todd Heap has agreed to a six-year extension. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 31st pick in the 2001 draft, Heap made back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2002 and 2003 but was limited to just six games last season because of a badly sprained right ankle suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 19. Heap had just 27 catches for 303 yards and three touchdowns last season. "Todd creates real matchup problems for defenses," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "With his size, he can overwhelm defensive backs and many linebackers. With his speed, he can run by the fastest players on the back end. This is another example of the commitment we have to signing our best players before they can become free agents."

Primetime Passes Physical, $1.5 Million Richer

Oct 15, 2014 6:34 PM

Deion Sanders signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, after passing his physical. Sanders, who returned to football with the Ravens last season after three years out of the game, attended practice earlier Wednesday but didn't participate as he hadn't yet been medically cleared. He underwent surgery in the offseason on one of the toes on his left foot. His return to the team was delayed for several days while his orthopedic surgeon in New York examined Sanders and reviewed the results of an MRI of the foot. The seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback, who will turn 38 on Aug. 9, could earn as much as $4 million if playing-time incentives are triggered. Sanders, playing primarily as a nickel back, finished second on Ravens last year with three interceptions. He was limited to nine games because of his toe and hamstring injuries.

Jamal Lewis Will Not Be Allowed To Attend Minicamp

Aug 3, 2014 12:27 AM

The Baltimore Ravens Running back Jamal Lewis' request to leave an Atlanta halfway house to attend the team's minicamp next week was denied by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, according to his lawyer. Lewis is obligated to spend the next two months at the halfway house after being released from a federal prison camp in Pensacola, Fla. ?That's just the way it is, and Jamal understands that he?s like anybody else,? said Froelich, who indicated that Lewis will finish his halfway house stint Aug. 1, the day the Ravens open training camp at McDaniel College. ?Jamal would have loved to be able go to the minicamp, but he?s going to play by the rules. He'll play by the rules they set.

Browns To Meet With LB Boulware

Oct 1, 2014 5:34 AM

Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Peter Boulware, released by the Baltimore Ravens nearly three weeks ago for salary cap and injury reasons and regarded as one of the top veterans still available in free agency, will meet on Thursday with Cleveland Browns officials. Boulware will fly to Cleveland on Wednesday evening for the Thursday session, agent Roosevelt Barnes told ESPN.com, and then is tentatively scheduled to visit with Seattle Seahawks officials on Friday, assuming he does not sign with the Browns before that. The eight-year veteran, who missed the '04 season with knee and toe injuries, has already visited with the Houston Texans. "I don't know how much longer it will take for Pete to decide where he wants to continue his career," Barnes said on Tuesday evening. "But he has done a good job of researching the places that might be a good fit for him, teams where he feels he can really contribute, and now he's going to get a closer look."
