"Our play at the cornerback position last year was not good enough, it's as simple as that," Lovie Smith said Monday.
"If we brought somebody back, we have faith in them. We think that they can fit into the mix some kind of way, but that's a position we'll continue to look to improve. We can't play the type of football that we want to play until we get better at the cornerback position, I will say that."
Derek Carr has signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders that runs through 2025.
The deal includes a no-trade clause.
Carr also mentioned Wednesday that he will be with the Raiders for "four more" years and said he would have understood had the new regime of general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels wanted "somebody new" at quarterback.
"But the fact that they keep believing in me and watching the tape and saying, 'Wow, we want you to be here for some more years or some more time,' that means more to me, way more to me than any of the other stuff it has to do with," Carr said. "It was very clear to me how they felt about me from day one."
