Geno Smith Backs Seahawks OC, Offense Amid Touchdown Drought

Nov 24, 2023 8:38 AM

Geno Smith remains confident in the Seattle Seahawks' offense despite another ineffective performance in Thursday night's 31-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Seattle managed just 220 yards, went 3-for-11 on third down and failed to score an offensive touchdown.

They've gone seven straight quarters without a touchdown and have just three over their past four games.

"I still believe in our coaches," Smith said. "I still believe in our players. I think it's been a tough stretch for us, but I believe that things will turn around. I think what we have to do is continue to work hard, if not work harder. There is no excuse for it. There is no words that I can say that will make it better, but what needs to be done is we need to work harder. We need to find a way. We've got a lot of talent. We've got a lot of good players on this offense and we've got the right coaches. So we've got to believe."

In response to a question about whether he'd change anything with the game plan in retrospect, Smith backed offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.

"I feel like Shane always does a great job and I've got his back 110 percent," Smith said. "He knows that. I feel like it comes down to us executing better as players. No matter what the play is called, it comes down to the players making it come to life. So Shane's called some great games for us and he's going to continue to do that. I just think overall we've got to stay confident, we've got to keep believing in what we're doing, keep believing and trusting our process and Shane's going to continue to call great plays and we've just got to execute for him."

Smith was also playing just four days after suffering a triceps contusion.

Seahawks Unsure If QB Geno Smith Will Play Thursday

Nov 20, 2023 12:56 AM

An injury to Geno Smith's right elbow and an ill-timed communication issue inside his helmet led to another Seattle Seahawks defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams.

Smith went down near the end of the third quarter when he took a hard hit to his throwing arm. He missed the remainder of that possession and two more before he returned for the final drive, getting Seattle in position for a potential winning field goal that Jason Myers missed from 55 yards out.

The Seahawks' 17-16 loss dropped them to 6-4 and a full game behind the 7-3 49ers in the NFC West after their win Sunday. Smith's injury, meanwhile, puts his status for Thursday night's game against San Francisco at Lumen Field in question.

Jason Myers sent the Seattle Seahawks to a 29-26 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Lumen Field when he hit a 43-yard field goal in the final seconds.

That kick also sent Week 10 of the NFL season into the record books.

The Seahawks' win over Washington was the fifth game of the day that was decided on a made field goal as time expired, joining the Cleveland Browns over the Baltimore Ravens, the Houston Texans over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Arizona Cardinals over the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Pete Carroll Defends Geno Smith But 'Concerned' About Turnovers

Nov 6, 2023 8:16 AM

Pete Carroll defended Geno Smith after the Seattle Seahawks' 37-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

"I don't think this is about Geno at all ... I think this is about our football team did not answer the bell here," Carroll said. "We couldn't get it done. We came in here to slug it out and they did a better job than we did, all of us. When they're rushing the passer, that's not Geno. This is not a one-guy deal."

Smith completed 13 of 28 attempts for 157 yards and an interception.

The interception was Smith's sixth in the past four games compared to four touchdown passes in that span. He also lost a fumble on one of the four times he was sacked.

"Not good enough," Smith said when asked for an assessment of his play.
