J.C. Jackson Upset Over Lack Of Contract Talks With Patriots

Feb 23, 2022 8:24 AM

J.C. Jackson says the New England Patriots haven't discussed a new contract with him.

The franchise-tag window opened on Tuesday. No player has more interceptions in their first four seasons than Jackson.

"I guess they feel like they don't need me," Jackson said. "I guess I can't be that important to them. I know I am, but they're not showing me."

He signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Tom Brady 2022 NFL MVP Odds: Goat +4500 to Win After 'Retirement'

Feb 17, 2022 7:35 AM

Seven-time Super Bowl champion QB Tom Brady has retired, but that hasn't stopped talk about a possible return. Brady remains an option in NFL futures markets for the 2022 MVP award.

Brady led the NFL in passing yards, completions and TD passes in 2021 at the age of 44. His run for an eighth title ring and a repeat Super Bowl fell short in the NFL Divisional Round against the eventual champion Rams.

In their 30-27 loss to the Rams, Brady and the Buccaneers rallied from a 27-3 deficit to tie the game at 27-27 with less than a minute to play.

Brady’s NFL odds to win his fourth MVP award are +4500 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Brady's Odds Shorter Than 17 Other QBs

The book lists 100 potential MVP candidates. Two-time defending MVP Aaron Rodgers of the Packers (for now) and Patrick Mahomes II of the Chiefs are the co-favorites at +700. Rodgers was named 2021-22 MVP before the Super Bowl.

Rodgers opened last season at +800 on betting apps to win MVP. Brady's numbers made a solid case for his winning the MVP this past season, but a bad 9-0 loss late in the season at home to the Saints all-but-doomed his chances.

Even though Brady walked away from the NFL after 22 seasons, there remains a belief, if not hope, among many inside and outside the game that he may eventually return.

Among those are the NFL betting oddsmakers at Caesars. They've given Brady better MVP odds than 17 other quarterbacks. Among the passers with longer odds than Brady to win the 2022 MVP: Mac Jones, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill and Jameis Winston.

Tom Brady Career Betting History

Brady finished his NFL career 221-144-8 all-time against the spread, including the postseason. He covered in 58.1% of his 363 starts, 47 of which occurred in the postseason. Brady won seven of his 10 Super Bowl starts, but finished 5-5 ATS in the Big Game. If you were able to bet $100 on Brady each week of his career using the industry standard -110 ATS odds, you'd be up $4,779.80.

Of the NFL quarterbacks with more than 30 starts who played in the 2021-22 season, Brady ranks 4th all-time ATS, behind Teddy Bridgewater (66.6%), his former backup Jimmy Garoppolo (59.2%) and Josh Allen (59.0%). Brady's 2022 MVP odds are also shorter than both Bridgewater's and Garoppolo's. A former Patriots QB with Brady, Garoppolo led San Francisco to the NFC title game.

What’s Next For Brady?

© USA Today

Brady has been less-than-convincing when it comes to hanging up his cleats for good.

After issuing multiple retirement announcements and "thank yous," Brady last week said on his "Let's Go!" podcast, “Never say never” when the subject of him playing again was raised by host Jim Gray.

This week, Brady's sentiment appears to have slightly shifted.

“I’m super content and happy with how I feel in my decision. All you can do is take it day by day, nothing’s promised for us. I’m gonna do things I really enjoy and spend time with people that I really enjoy spending time with. So the future is bright," Brady told the SiriusXM audience Monday night.

That means fans and bettors are still free to freak out, and perhaps back the GOAT one more time on betting sites, when his next "workout" video pops up on Instagram. Brady's former teammates appear split on their thoughts about his future. And there's been healthy speculation that Brady wants to eventually end up playing for the San Francisco 49ers, the team closest to his boyhood home and the one he rooted for as a boy.

Brady remains on the Buccaneers active roster. Tampa Bay controls his rights for one more year. The Buccaneers could go with second-year QB Kyle Trask and keep Brady on their inactive or reserve roster if they believe he may return. Or the team can trade his rights if he wants to return elsewhere.

Odell Beckham Nearly Signed With Patriots, Saints

Feb 11, 2022 7:51 AM

Before he signed with the Los Angeles Rams, Odell Beckham had discussions about joining two other teams.

Beckham was cut by the Cleveland Browns on November 5.

Several teams reached out to the wide receiver once he hit the open market. The New Orleans Saints were one of the first.

"I was close, very close," Beckham said of signing in New Orleans. "It just didn't feel like the right time. Right place, wrong time."

After turning down the Saints, he also talked with the New England Patriots.

"I don't think I joked with him on the phone," Beckham said of speaking with Bill Belichick. "But I was like, if this was three years ago, it would have been ideal. Because Tom [Brady] is one of the -- he's one of my favorites."

Robert Kraft Had 'Temper Tantrum' Over Tom Brady's Retirement Post

Feb 3, 2022 10:36 PM

In Tom Brady's official retirement post this week he failed to mention the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft or Bill Belichick.

Brady's announcement included nearly 1,000 words and thanked dozens within the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' organization.

Kraft, the Patriots' longtime owner, was upset over the lack of recognition.

Ted Johnson, who played his entire 10-year career with the Patriots and won three Super Bowls, claims Kraft had a "temper tantrum" after finding out Brady left the Patriots out of his retirement announcement.

"I was told earlier tonight that … it was an unpleasant day today at the executive offices in Foxboro and that Robert Kraft initially when he first heard the news was very upset," Johnson said.

"He was screaming and he was yelling and there was a temper tantrum that he threw after he read this IG post. So, he was not happy about it in Foxboro, and I'm not surprised. But to hear about the outward emotion that he showed regarding this post was a little bit surprising."

Bill Belichick Calls Tom Brady 'The Best Player In NFL History'

Feb 3, 2022 8:21 AM

Bill Belichick released a statement about Tom Brady's career Wednesday, a day after the quarterback officially announced his retirement.

Referring to Brady as the "ultimate competitor and winner," the New England Patriots coach said in a statement: "Tom's humble beginning in professional football ultimately ended with him becoming the best player in NFL history."

Belichick has coached in 47 consecutive seasons, an NFL record.

"Tom consistently performed at the highest level against competition that always made him the number one player to stop," Belichick said in the statement. "His pursuit of excellence was inspirational. Tom was professional on and off the field, and carried himself with class, integrity and kindness. I thank Tom for his relentless pursuit of excellence and positive impact on me and the New England Patriots for 20 years."

Tom Brady Officially Announces Retirement

Feb 2, 2022 8:39 AM

Tom Brady has officially announced his retirement from the NFL, saying Tuesday in an Instagram post that he is "not going to make that competitive commitment anymore."

"I have always believed the sport of football is an 'all-in' proposition -- if a 100% competitive commitment isn't there, you won't succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game," Brady said in his statement on Instagram. "There is a physical, mental and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life.

"This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention. I've done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions. And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it's best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes."

Brady won seven Super Bowls and appeared in three others in defeat.

Brady won NFL MVP in 2007, 2010 and 2017.
