Patriots To Start Mac Jones Against Jets

Oct 27, 2022 8:20 AM

The New England Patriots will start Mac Jones this weekend against the New York Jets, according to a source.

Jones took approximately 90% of the first-team reps at practice Wednesday.

Bill Belichick pulled Jones after three series in Monday's blowout loss to the Chicago Bears, inserting rookie Bailey Zappe in his place for the rest of the game.

Bill Belichick Mum On Starter After In-Game Quarterback Switch

Oct 25, 2022 8:54 AM

Bill Belichick wasn't ready to name a starting quarterback after switching from Mac Jones to Bailey Zappe in the New England Patriots' 33-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday night.

Belichick pulled Jones after three series, going to rookie Zappe for the rest of the game. The coach wasn't ready to commit late Monday, saying: "We just finished the game."

Jones' final play was an interception, but Belichick insisted he wasn't benched and would have returned to the game in the second half if the score had been closer.

He said the team intended to play both Jones and Zappe -- and informed both players of the plan leading into the game -- with Jones' recovery from a left high ankle sprain "a factor" in the decision.

Jones, Kraft Have Heated Exchange Ahead Of Goodell Contract Vote

Oct 18, 2022 9:38 PM

Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft had a heated exchange before NFL owners voted 31-1 to permit their compensation committee to open negotiations on a new contract with Roger Goodell.

Kraft joined the majority in strong support for the measure with Jones the lone dissenter.

Jones eventually told Kraft, "Don't f--- with me."

Kraft replied, "Excuse me?"

"Don't mess with me," Jones said.

In 2017, Goodell signed a new five-year deal that was different from his previous ones. Jones led a charge that restructured Goodell's deal from mostly salaried to mostly bonuses based on performance.

One owner told ESPN that the committee might consider a two- or three-year deal.

The New York Times reported last year that Goodell's total compensation over a two-year period from 2020 to 2021 was nearly $128 million.

Bill Belichick Won't Commit To Mac Jones Once Healthy

Oct 13, 2022 8:53 AM

Mac Jones has missed two games with an ankle sprain and isn't getting a lot of reassurance from Bill Belichick that he'll get his job back as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots.

"We'll see," Belichick said when asked if Jones will reclaim his QB1 role once healthy. "I don't know."

The Patriots were forced to go with rookie Bailey Zappe during Week 4's loss to the Green Bay Packers after veteran Brian Hoyer suffered a head injury. The fourth-round pick quarterbacked the team in their blowout win over the Detroit Lions last week.

"I'm not going to get into a lot of hypotheticals on all those different things that might or might not happen," Belichick said. "That's just, to me, a waste of time. I'm not going to sit around and dream up scenarios and all of that. We'll take things as they come and go from there."
