Be The GM: Colin Kaepernick Or Patrick Peterson

Sep 19, 2014 7:28 PM

Colin Kaepernick and Patrick Peterson advanced to the second round of our 'Be The GM' series by getting past Russell Wilson and Chris Long respectively.

Kaepernick completed 62.4 percent of his 218 regular season attempts and threw an interception in just 1.4 percent of those. Kaepernick’s decision-making and accuracy was far more advanced than expected and the strength of his arm puts the entire field in play vertically and horizontally.

Kaepernick is gifted as a runner but is on another plane. Kaepernick ran for 415 yards on 62 attempts (6.6 yards per carry average). His 181 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts in the Divisional Round against the Green Bay Packers was one of the most dominant performances from a quarterback in history and even 25 percent of that production would make Kaepernick a future Hall of Famer.

Peterson wasn’t as much of a factor as a returner in his second season as he was as a rookie, but he intercepted seven balls and generally played strong man-to-man coverage as he continues to refine the mechanics of his game. Peterson also recovered five fumbles, which led the NFL.

Peterson is such a special player that Bruce Arians is installing a package of plays for him on offense.

Bruce Arians is ready for the Arizona Cardinals to challenge the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks for the NFC West.

"I don't see the dominance that everybody else talks about," Arians said. "One of those teams may be (dominant). It still has to be played on Sunday."

The 49ers and Seahawks are widely considered to be the two most talented teams in the NFL.

Patrick Peterson Compared To Bo Sanders, Deion Sanders

Oct 30, 2014 11:25 AM

Steve Keim, general manager of the Arizona Cardinals, compares Patrick Peterson to two of the most dynamic players to ever play in the NFL.

"From an ability standpoint, I've never seen anything like him. He's the closest thing in the league to a Bo Jackson, a Deion Sanders," Keim recently told Robert Klemko of TheMMQB.com. "I've seen him stand on the field flatfooted and throw the ball 65-70 yards. He goes out to practice as a wideout, and runs a 10- and 15-yard out as well as anyone on our team. His value to our team is really unparalleled."

The Cardinals have installed a package of 15 plays on offense for Peterson, who is a cornerback.

Scout: Mathieu 'Pound For Pound' Best Player In Cardinals' Camp

Sep 12, 2014 5:15 PM

Tyrann Mathieu has been highly impressive in camp with the Arizona Cardinals.

One scout told Ron Wolfley of Arizonasports.com that Mathieu has been "pound-for-pound, the best player on the field." An offensive assistant added that the third-round draft pick is "going to change the team."

Mathieu will help the Cardinals fill holes in the secondary caused by the departures of Adrian Wilson, Kerry Rhodes and Greg Toler.

Cardinals Using Patrick Peterson On Offense

Oct 17, 2014 12:36 AM

Bruce Arians is experimenting with using Patrick Peterson in the Arizona Cardinals' offense.

Peterson is a shutdown cornerback entering his third season, but he also is one of the most dynamic return men in the NFL.

"I'm pretty dynamic with the ball in my hands," he said. "I'm not saying the offense needs help. They have great talent over there. But I guess (Arians) just wanted more explosive plays from guys that could help."

Peterson had a few snaps last season in the wildcat formation, but Arians doesn't use the formation and would instead use him at receiver or in the backfield.

"If he wasn't playing corner, he'd probably be just as good a receiver or an H-back," Carson Palmer said, "a Percy Harvin-type player, because you've seen what he can do as a punt returner, obviously."
