Arians Will Use Wayne Model To Revive Fitzgerald

Oct 31, 2014 6:53 AM

Bruce Arians plans to revive the career of Larry Fitzgerald as he did with Reggie Wayne in 2012.

Fitzgerald had just 75 catches for less than 1,000 yards in 2012.

“As a receiver, you can’t hand it to them, you have to throw it to them,” Arians said. “They can double-cover him, and you don’t throw it to him if he is double-covered and someone else is single-covered. You’ve got to take what is there as a quarterback, but you do have to get him the ball because he is such a tremendous talent.

“When I first met with Reggie, Reggie had been on the left side for 10 years. The first day of spring I put him over there on the right, and he looked like he had palsy. I said, ‘It’ll come. You have to retrain your body here. Wait until I put you in the slot.’ There was buy-in.”

Cardinals Looking For QB With Grit

Oct 31, 2014 6:57 AM

Bruce Arians is looking for the Arizona Cardinals to have a quarterback with grit.

Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley had the quarterback job with the Cardinals at various time last season.

"When you go out and evaluate quarterbacks," Arians said, via The Arizona Republic, "you can look at arm strength, you can look at accuracy, you can look at height, weight, speed -- all the things that are coming up with these young quarterbacks -- but you truly can't measure two muscles, the brain and the heart, and that's what separates them.

"That's the grit. When they step in the huddle, the other 10 guys, whatever comes out of his mouth, they believe it's going to work. That doesn't mean he's the most talented player in the world, but he has that leadership, grit, that he's going to do whatever it takes for his football team. It means he's tough as nails and guys will follow him into a fire. That's what you're looking for. That's grit."

Cardinals FB Mauia Met Kekua In 2011

Oct 31, 2014 7:02 AM

Arizona Cardinals fullback Reagan Mauia said he believes Lennay Kekua existed because he met her in person.

Mauia claims to have met the woman purported to be her in American Samoa in June 2011.

"This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa."

Mauia was introduced by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo and believed the two were cousins.

"She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... "

Mauia said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother. When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said: "No, she is real."

NFL On Cycle Of Hiring Offensive-Minded, White Head Coaches

Oct 31, 2014 3:45 PM

The NFL appears to be in a cycle where franchises are looking for offensive head coaches. They have also been uniformly white men this offseason.

The NFL had eight head coach openings this offseason and all six of the hires have been by white men lauded for their ability to coach on offense.

Andy Reid (Chiefs), Doug Marrone (Bills), Rob Chudzinski (Browns), Mike McCoy (Chargers), Marc Trestman (Bears) and Chip Kelly (Eagles) have all been hired.

The favorites for the final two positions are Bruce Arians for the Cardinals and Greg Roman for the Jaguars.

All of the general manager hires have also been white men.

The NFL requires the interview of at least one minority candidate for every head coach and GM position.
