Jaworski Believes Cardinals Should Open QB Competition

Aug 21, 2014 8:14 AM

Ron Jaworski believes the Cardinals should have an open competition at quarterback next season between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton. "I really believe that this quarterback job at Arizona is going to be open," Jaworksi said. "I think John Skelton has shown enough where they've got to take a good, hard look at him and say maybe we have two really good quarterbacks here, let's open this competition." Jaworski is surprised by Kolb's struggles this season with his accuracy. "Kevin is normally a very accurate passer," Jaworksi stated. "I thought he'd be around 65% in this Cardinals offensive structure, not where he's at 56-57%. So he hasn't played up to his talents. He really hasn't."

The Cardinals plan to keep quarterback Kevin Kolb for at least one more season, according to a report. Kolb will remain with the Cardinals in 2012 despite a looming $7 million roster bonus owed to him in March, sources told The Arizona Republic this week.

Fitzgerald's Dad Rips Early Doucet

Oct 7, 2014 7:24 PM

Larry Fitzgerald Sr. took the time to rip his son's teammate, wide receiver Early Doucet, via Twitter on Monday. A popular Minneapolis-based sports writer, Fitzgerald Sr. doesn't believe the Cardinals have effectively reaped the benefits of his son's skills. "Early Doucet bombed this year he drops to many passes not a dependable No.2," Larry Sr. tweeted on Monday. "Needs to work harder at his job. He dropped 5 TDs this year." Doucet tripped while attempting to haul in a game-tying touchdown pass on Saturday against the Bengals, but has otherwise enjoyed the best statistical season of his career with 53 receptions for 682 yards and five touchdowns. When a reporter for ESPN.com asked Fitzgerald Sr. to elaborate, he had no problem doing so. "I just know that Larry invited him to come and work out with him this summer and some guys take initiative and do it, some guys don't," Fitzgerald Sr. said, possibly unaware Doucet had offseason sports hernia surgery that left him medically uncleared until August. "But with the lockout, I thought he would have worked on it a little harder. That is me. People criticize me because they think I talk too much. That is just how I see it."

The Cardinals are making some progress on a new contract with defensive end Calais Campbell. The two sides have passed the casual level in their talks and moved to intermediate, according to a league source. If Arizona can't sign Campbell to a long-term deal, don't be surprised if they use the franchise tag.

Cards Could Opt Out Of Kolb's Deal With Minimal Cap Hit

Oct 8, 2014 6:11 AM

Kevin Kolb could still be the quarterback of the future for the Cardinals, but he has struggled on the field and with injuries this season. If Kolb's production doesn't improve in the near future, the Cardinals could move on with minimal financial and salary-cap ramifications. He missed significant time earlier this season with foot and ankle injuries, as well as a concussion recently. Kolb will earn a $10 million signing bonus and $2 million salary in 2011. He's due a $7 million roster bonus this March, which conceivably could be declined by the Cardinals, meaning they would could get out of Kolb's deal after paying him just $12 million over one year. Kolb has a $1 million salary in 2012, bringing his total compensation for that year to $8 million, and $20 million over the first two years of the deal. With a $9 million salary and $2 million roster bonus due to Kolb in 2013, the Cardinals again have another chance to move on with limited finacial ramifications at the beginning of that league year.

Kevin Kolb Practices 'A Little Bit'

Oct 2, 2014 2:34 AM

Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb said he was able to practice “a little bit” on Wednesday after tests evaluating the concussion he sustained in Sunday’s win over the 49ers. “The symptoms are down,” he said. “It’s just a matter of making sure they are down long enough to where I can get out there and then be in full-speed action. That’s the key right now. It’s a touchy subject, and we want to make sure that we err on the right side.”
