Young Improves Wonderlic Score

Jul 8, 2014 4:09 AM

After a rumor spread through the NFL combine Saturday that the Texas quarterback had scored a shockingly low 6 on the Wonderlic test, Young reportedly took the test again and scored a much more acceptable 16. According to a report in the Houston Chronicle, the original report of Young's 6 was false. "I've been told it was inaccurate by a source good enough for me to quote it," Texans general manager Charley Casserly said Sunday afternoon. The test, which consists of 50 non-football related questions in 12 minutes, is designed to determine a prospect's ability to learn. A low score could dramatically impact a prospect's draft position; according to the report, no coach, scout or general manager surveyed could produce an example of a starting quarterback with a single-digit Wonderlic score. A score of 20 indicates average intelligence and corresponds roughly to an IQ of 100. However, it has long been believed that the test is culturally biased and many executives administer additional tests to supplement the Wonderlic.

Titans Won't Exercise $50 Million Option On McNair

Oct 30, 2014 10:40 PM

A $50 million option bonus was added to Titans quarterback Steve McNair's contract in March 2004. Nearly two years later, Titans General Manager Floyd Reese said what most everyone expected to hear. "We won't exercise,'' Reese said of the bonus. "You can write that if you want, though I don't think it will be a surprise to anybody.'' The option, which would add three years to the contract and extend it through 2009, is due in March. Even with the Titans declining to exercise it, McNair will remain under contract through the 2006 season, when he's scheduled to make a base salary of $9 million. In the meantime, the Titans will continue to talk with McNair's agent, Bus Cook, about a restructured contract. Reese said the $1 million non-exercise fee isn't due until September, according to Cook.

Titans And McNair Look To Negotiate Around Bonus

Nov 8, 2014 12:01 PM

Steve McNair is due a $50 million roster bonus in March, which the Titans and McNair agent James ?Bus? Cook are trying to negotiate around. ?We?re still talking, but they?re going to have to make some sort of decision,? Cook said. ?I know they want Steve back for another year, but it?s going to have to be a new contract with some guaranteed money for him.? According to Cook, even if the Titans exercise the $1 million buyout rather than the $50 million option bonus, there is so much old prorated bonus and acceleration in the contract (about $13 million) that it would push his cap number somewhere around $23 million for 2006.
