Baker Mayfield Named Starter For Buccaneers

Aug 23, 2023 8:18 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named Baker Mayfield their starting quarterback.

Mayfield beat out 2021 second-round draft pick Kyle Trask.

"Baker's our starting quarterback, Kyle's our No. 2," Todd Bowles said. "We love everything Kyle has done. And he's gotten leaps and bounds better than he was in the spring and he's continuing to get better and we're excited about him. But Baker's our guy right now -- experience-wise and just understanding the playbook just a little bit better. But Kyle's on the come [up]. But we like both guys. We like where we're at. Baker's [No.] 1, Kyle's [No.] 2."

Todd Bowles Has No Timetable To Name Buccaneers' Starting QB

Aug 21, 2023 7:53 AM

Todd Bowles says the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have no timetable to name a starting quarterback for Week 1's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are fighting for the starting role.

"We don't have a timetable on it," Bowles said. "We'll name it when we name it. We feel comfortable with where we're at, so we'll go from there."

Mayfield started Tampa Bay's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Trask started the second game against the New York Jets.
