Tom Brady Won't Sign Dummy Contract With Bucs, Will Be Free Agent

Feb 17, 2023 11:18 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take the full $35.1 million cap charge on Tom Brady in 2023, which means he will not sign a dummy contract that allows them to divide his cap charge over two years.

Brady announced his retirement on Feb. 1st.

Brady, however, will not begin his job with Fox Sports until 2024 at the earliest and will technically be a free agent this offseason.

Tom Brady's Dad Suggests Quarterback Was Tired Of Getting Hit

Feb 8, 2023 9:48 AM

Tom Brady didn't offer a specific reason when he retired from football for the second time earlier this month.

In the days since his announcement, Brady has said one reason he's walking away is because it's the "right time."

In an interview with ESPN's Mike Greenberg, Tom Brady, Sr. revealed a reason why the quarterback decided to call it quits.

"This has been a really rough six months on his personal life, his family life, on his football life," Brady Sr. said of his son. "He once said this, he said, 'I'm getting tired of getting hit.' You know, having played 23 years and he holds the ignominious record of most sacks [taken] in the NFL -- I think 600 or 700 sacks -- and there must be another two or three thousand knockdowns."

With Brady getting older, it seems that the hits were starting to take a bigger toll.

"At 45 years of age, you say, 'Hey, do I want to get hit one more time,'" Brady Sr. said. "The answer's really 'No, I really don't want to unless everything's clicking.' Unfortunately, it wasn't clicking this year and I think it was a foregone conclusion [that he would retire]."

Tom Brady Won't Start Fox Broadcasting Role Until 2024

Feb 6, 2023 2:50 PM

Tom Brady said Monday that he won't begin his work as a sports broadcaster at Fox Sports until the fall of 2024.

"That's great for me," Brady in an appearance on FS1's "The Herd with Colin Cowherd." "Take some time to really learn, be great at what I really want to do [and] become great at thinking about the opportunity and making sure I don't rush into anything.

"I think when people really bet on me; one thing about my career -- whether it's when I was drafted with the Patriots or signing in free agency with the Bucs -- I want to be fully committed and I never wanted to let people down. I think my biggest motivator was that."

In May 2022, Brady agreed to join Fox Sports as its lead analyst when his playing career was over.

Fox did not disclose terms of Brady's deal, but the New York Post reported that it was a 10-year, $375 million contract.

Robert Kraft Hopes To Sign Tom Brady To One-Day Retirement Deal

Feb 2, 2023 10:16 AM

Robert Kraft told CNN he hopes to sign Tom Brady to a one-day retirement deal with the New England Patriots.

For the second-straight year, Brady announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday. He insisted that he'd stick with the decision this time around.

"I'd do it tomorrow," Kraft said of inking Brady to a ceremonial contract. "Not only do I want it, our fans are clamoring for it and to us, he always has been and always will be a Patriot. ... We'll do everything we can in our power to bring him back, sign off as a Patriot and find ways to honor him for many years to come. He did so much to bring life and good cheer to our community and he's a beloved figure and he's earned the respect and love that people feel for him like no other athlete in our town and we've had some great ones."

Tom Brady's Retirement 'A Family Thing, Not A Football Thing'

Feb 1, 2023 2:06 PM

Tom Brady had a disappointing 2022 season, but he largely remained an effective quarterback. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted to re-sign Brady in free agency, while he also had been linked with the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and others.

The decision for Brady to retire appears to be due to his desire to be close to his family. Brady's children now primarily live in Miami and playing for another team likely would have meant being on the other side of the country.

"This is a family thing, not a football thing," said Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
