NFL, Saints Fans Dispute Ownership Of 'Who Dat'

Oct 31, 2014 1:37 PM

There is some doubt over who owns "Who Dat?" T-shirt makers were hit with cease-and-desist letters from the NFL demanding that they stop selling shirts with the traditional cheer of Saints fans. The NFL says the shirts infringe on a legal trademark it owns. Separately, two brothers and longtime Saints fans claim they own the phrase, which was around before the long-downtrodden team's inception in 1966.

Former Saint Dobler Doesn't Like Brees

Oct 9, 2014 7:00 AM

Former Saints lineman Conrad Dobler has a problem with New Orleans star quarterback Drew Brees. "The people in New Orleans are fabulous people," Dobler told CBS Sports. "It's great they have a team in the Super Bowl. Those fans and that city deserve this." Dobler has been heavily involved in attempting to gain better benefits for older retired players. "Drew Brees is a great quarterback, but personally I don't care for him," Dobler said. "I don't like him very much. He basically called us a bunch of whiny old men. He's in the Super Bowl but doesn't understand the history of the game. "He's never called the retired players or communicated with us for saying something that was false about us. We're not complainers. We just want the system to be better. He portrayed us as irresponsible. Older players aren't the irresponsible ones." Brees was once critical of the Gridiron Greats, an organization dedicated to improving the financial and physical well-being of older NFL retirees.

NFL: Hit On Favre Should've Been Flagged

Oct 31, 2014 5:15 AM

The NFL says that a third-quarter hit on Vikings quarterback Brett Favre should have been flagged in last weekend's NFC Championship Game. The low blow on Favre, which hobbled him, would have reversed a penalty. "It's the type of hit that we don't want," NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira said, "... because clearly we're trying to protect the knees and we need to focus on this to make sure we don't miss [them]." With the score tied 21-21, Favre took a hit from Saints defensive end Bobby McCray. Minnesota would have had a first down at the Saints' 19-yard line.

Colts Won't Indulge Saints In Trash Talk

Oct 9, 2014 6:54 AM

The Colts are keeping their mouths shut in the midst of trash talk from the Saints. On Tuesday, New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams promised his players would put a couple of "remember-me shots" on Peyton Manning. Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell said the Colts couldn't control what other teams say.

NFL Forces Pro Bowlers From Saints, Colts To Attend Game

May 23, 2014 1:18 AM

Every player from the Saints and Colts are required by the NFL to be on hand for the Pro Bowl game. Even though they won't participate, each will receive the appropriate paycheck -- $45,000 for players on the winning team, $23,500 for the losers. The Colts complained to the league regarding the situation to no avail. Coach Jim Caldwell could not offer a "fast itinerary" for the weekend, but ESPN.com reported a resolution has the seven Colts fulfilling their Pro Bowl obligations. That involves departing for Miami following a Sunday practice on a charter jet paid for by the NFL and remaining in South Florida, where the remainder of the team will join them Monday.

NFL Won't Allow Superdome To Hold Super Bowl Party

Feb 17, 2014 11:37 AM

NFL rules will prohibit the Saints from holding a Super Bowl viewing party at the Superdome. Dome officials say they have been swamped with calls from fans all over the country asking if they could open the Superdome for the big game. "Yeah, we've had a lot of calls, and certainly wish we could show it, but there is a long standing NFL policy that you cannot show the game to a mass audience, so we're just not able to do it. Sorry, wish we could," said Bill Curl, Superdome spokesman.

Archie Manning Will Root For Colts

Oct 11, 2014 6:29 AM

Archie Manning played most of his 16-year NFL career with the Saints and he still lives in New Orleans, but he'll root for his son Peyton's Colts in the Super Bowl. "It's a game I'm going to pull for my son," the elder Manning told the Indianapolis Star. "[Saints coach] Sean Payton knows that. He's a great friend of mine," Archie added. "[Saints quarterback] Drew Brees knows that. That's just the way it is. "Anybody who thinks it's different must not have children."

Payton Told Hartley To Hit Fleur De Lis

Aug 23, 2014 8:53 PM

Garrett Hartley was perhaps aiming for an imaginary Saints' logo when he kicked the game-winning field goal on Sunday in overtime. ?He went out the first time, and I just said go hit it," said head coach Sean Payton. "Then the timeout was called. You try to anticipate those moments. And during the course of the week last week I had said something to him at one point in regards to you know when it comes time for you to hit a game‑winning kick, what do you want me to tell you? So you want to go through it a little bit with him. I just told him 'you belong here to hit this kick'. ?I don't know if he heard me. I said there is a little tiny fleur de lis up there between the uprights. Why don't you try to hit that fleur de lis, and he hit it solid and true. It was obviously a big kick for him and he had plenty of leg.?

Vikings Had Huge Trench Counter Advantage Despite Loss

Apr 19, 2014 2:34 AM

The Trench Counter always goes a long ways in indicating which team played superior football at the line of scrimmage and the results from the NFC Championship were fascinating. Minnesota had a +8.0 over New Orleans in the Trench Counter, even despite the Saints having a +4 in the turnover department. The Vikings had 218 more total yards and 16 more first downs, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities at the end of the first half and the end of regulation. Fewer than 5% of losing teams have a positive Trench Counter over the course of a season and it is incredibly rare for a team to lose a game with a differential that high. In the AFC Championship Game, the Colts held a +10.5 advantage over the Jets. Click here for more information on the Trench Counter

Vikings Don't Agree With Officials Following Loss

May 16, 2014 10:08 PM

The Vikings were unhappy with some of the officiating following their loss to the Saints in the NFC Title Game. Minnesota disagreed with a pass interference penalty on linebacker Ben Leber against tight end David Thomas in overtime. Drew Brees overthrew the pass and appeared to be uncatchable, but Leber was called for pass interference after the two players got tangled and fell to the ground. "I don't think it was catchable," Leber said. "I don't obviously agree with the call. But they made it. I hate using the phrase, but it is what it is. They called it. We have to deal with it. We have to play on." The penalty gave the Saints a first down at the Vikings 29-yard line.
