Bush And Kardashian Back On

Oct 31, 2014 9:25 AM

Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian have reconciled their relationship and are once again a couple. "They're totally back together for real," says a source close to the couple. "Kim and Reggie spent a few months apart getting their priorities together and figuring out who they were as individuals so they can make it work together." Bush and Kardashian broke up in July.

Saints Activate Chase Daniel As 3rd QB

Sep 15, 2014 6:14 AM

The Saints have activated quarterback Chase Daniel for their game against the Bills on Sunday. New Orleans had been carrying just two quarterbacks on their roster, starter Drew Brees and backup Mark Brunell, with receiver Lance Moore serving as their emergency option. Moore will be inactive on Sunday, so the Saints opted to activate the rookie Daniel.

Saints, Broncos, Vikings And Jets Lead NFL Team Rankings

Aug 8, 2014 8:02 AM

By Christopher Reina The scoreboard is where games are officially won and lost, but they are largely decided by the team that wins the battles of yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards lost, first downs, and turnovers. For this reason, I created the following formula called the ?Trench Counter? to look at which team truly controls the game: (2x Yards per pass) + (2x Yards per carry) + (.5 First downs) - (Penalty yards/10) - (2.5 Turnovers) - (Opposing Team's Trench Counter) Click here for more information on the Trench Counter For the 2009 season, our weekly team rankings will be based solely off this formula. 1. New Orleans Saints: 20.8 The Saints rank first in passer rating for (132.9), as well as against (53.4), which goes a long ways in placing them atop our rankings. 2. Denver Broncos: 12.9 Denver is somewhat flukishly ranked second after Week 2, but they have only allowed 27 first downs and opposing offenses are 8-for-29 on 3rd down. The defense has been shockingly effective with just 13 total point allowed. 3. Minnesota Vikings: 9.4 Adrian Peterson is averaging 13.9 yards per rush during the 4th quarter. 4. New York Jets: 8.8 The Jets have allowed just 4.8 yards per pass and are the only team to have not allowed a touchdown. Rex Ryan has also protected his rookie quarterback by running the ball in 57% of their plays. 5. Baltimore Ravens: 8.3 Willis McGahee is one of three players (Frank Gore and Peterson are the others) with four touchdowns. 6. Indianapolis Colts: 8.0 Dallas Clark is the NFL's early leader in receiving yards with 222. 7. Buffalo Bills: 7.2 The Bills have allowed just 65 yards per game on the ground. 8. San Francisco 49ers: 6.5 Shaun Hill's 87.8 passer rating is plenty acceptable so long as the defense continues its stinginess, though he has the lowest rating amongst undefeated quarterbacks. He is one of five QBs (including Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers) to not have an interception on the books yet. 9. New York Giants: 5.4 The running game hasn't gotten off the ground yet for the Giants, who are averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. Mario Manningham is averaging 16.0 yards per reception. 10. Green Bay Packers: 3.3 Aaron Rodgers cannot become an MVP quarterback when he is so frequently horizontal. Antwan Odom recorded five sacks in Cincinnati's 34-24 upset at Green Bay. He has already been sacked 10 times this season, compared to 34 all of 2008. Rodgers also hasn't been helped by the eight drops from his receivers. 11. Tennessee Titans: 3.3 Despite the Tennessee loss, Chris Johnson had 284 total yards on Sunday, which was 52 yards shy of Flipper Anderson's record. The Titans are 0-2, yet had a positive Trench Counter in each game. 12. Atlanta Falcons: 2.7 Michael Turner's yards per carry average has dipped from 4.5 to 3.4, though he did rush for fewer than 4.0 yards per carry in nine 2008 games. 13. Arizona Cardinals: 2.1 Betrand Berry has two sacks and two fumble recoveries. 14. Seattle Seahawks: 2.0 Justin Forsett has proved to be an excellent secondary running back, rushing for 52 yards on eight attempts, while also catching six balls for 57 yards. 15. Philadelphia Eagles: 0.9 Even though Correll Buckhalter has been largely successful in Denver (7.2 yards per carry), the Eagles haven't had trouble running the ball effectively, with a team average of 5.1. 16. Washington Redskins: 0.8 There have been some rumbling complaints on Clinton Portis, but his 4.0 yards per carry isn't dreadful, though Ladell Betts appears done as a viable alternative. 17. New England Patriots: -0.4 Julian Edelman filled in nicely in the Wes Welker role, with eight receptions for 98 yards against the Jets. 18. Pittsburgh Steelers: -0.9 With Willie Parker averaging 2.4 yards per carry in his 27 carries, it might seem wise to give more carries to Rashard Mendenhall (6.4 average). But 39 of his 45 carries were on one carry. 19. Kansas City Chiefs: -1.4 The Chiefs are just 7-for-25 on third down, but they are a surprisingly prolific 3-for-5 on 4th down. 20. Dallas Cowboys: -1.7 The Cowboys have recorded 11 rushes of over 10 yards and easily lead the league in yards per rush with 7.0. 21. Oakland Raiders: -2.5 While many are ready to write-off one Oakland first rounder (JaMarcus Russell), his predecessor in 2006, Michael Huff, has recorded two interceptions in each of the first two games and also made the game-clinching breakup on 4th down. 22. Chicago Bears: -3.2 Matt Forte has struggled badly through the first two weeks with a yards per rush average of 2.2. 23. San Diego Chargers: -4.5 Darren Sproles has logged 183 yards after the catch, contributing heavily to Philip Rivers' total of 357. Rivers has thrown for more YAC than seven teams have thrown for total yards, including the Vikings. 24. Cincinnati Bengals: -4.5 Carson Palmer has an NFL-best 131.8 passer rating while in the red zone. 25. Jacksonville Jaguars: -4.9 With Troy Williamson out for the season, the Jaguars will rely on rookie receivers Jarett Dillard and Mike Thomas to round out their receiver corps. 26. Carolina Panthers: -6.7 Thomas Davis is the current leader in tackles with 28. Jake Delhomme also leads in interceptions. 27. Houston Texans: -7.3 Steve Slaton is fully engrossed in the sophomore slump and the Texans have averaged just 50.5 yards per carry, though they have played two good run defenses. 28. St. Louis Rams: -9.6 The Rams are 0-2, but the offensive line has improved substantially. 29. Miami Dolphins: -10.4 The Dolphins had 13 more first downs and 178 more rushing yards, but giving up 12.3 yards per pass eventually made the Colts the victor on the scoreboard and with the Trench Counter. 30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: -10.9 Raheem Morris has been riding Gaines Adams hard, who has yet to come close to living up to the billing when he was a top pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. 31. Cleveland Browns: -15.3 Braylon Edwards isn't officially back yet, but the drop blues have seemed to fade through the first two weeks. 32. Detroit Lions: -18.2 Maybe it's because they played each other in Week 1, but the Lions are the bizarro Saints, with a passer rating of 40.5, while their defense has allowed a passer rating of 134.9, both of which rank last.

RealGM's Week 2 Rundown

Sep 30, 2014 11:34 PM

There were a number of upsets, and near upsets, in Week 2 of the NFL season. In addition to some victories for David over Goliath, we saw a host of excellent individual performances in football?s second weekend. We will also calculate each team?s Trench Counter*. Washington 9, St. Louis 7 Team Trench Counter: Redskins +4.7, Rams-4.7 The Washington Redskins (1-1) didn?t score a touchdown at FedEx Field, but were still able to defeat the St. Louis Rams (0-2) thanks to a strong defensive performance. Jason Campbell went 23-for-35 with 242 yards, while Clinton Portis led the team on the ground with 79 yards on twelve carries. Chris Cooley led the Redskins in receiving with 7 grabs for 83 yards. Washington held St. Louis to fewer than 250 total yards, limiting Marc Bulger to 125 yards and a touchdown on 15-for-28 passing. Steven Jackson was the game?s offensive star, rushing for 107 yards on seventeen carries, while Laurent Robinson scored the afternoon?s only touchdown. Both Bulger and Campbell were sacked just once in a game that featured six punts. Houston 34, Tennessee 31 Team Trench Counter: Texans -0.8, Titans +0.8 After falling behind 21-7 in the second quarter, the Houston Texans (1-1) surged back to keep the Tennessee Titans (0-2) from notching their first win of the season. Matt Schaub and the Texans offense exploded as the quarterback went 25-for-39 with 357 yards and four touchdowns. Andre Johnson caught 10 of those passes for 149 yards and two scores. Steve Slaton was held in check by Tennessee?s defense, but Kris Brown?s 23-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter was enough for Houston to complete their comeback. Kerry Collins went 21-for-33 with 216 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the loss. Chris Johnson was close to dominant through three quarters, but Houston limited him over the game?s final fifteen minutes. The second-year running back had 197 yards and two touchdowns on 16 rushing attempts, while also hauling in nine passes for 87 yards and another score. If the Titans lose to the Jets next Sunday they?ll have matched their 2008 loss total (3) in as many weeks. New Orleans 48, Philadelphia 22 Team Trench Counter: Saints +14.3, Eagles -14.3 The New Orleans Saints (2-0) put up more than forty points for the second straight week as they drilled the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) at Lincoln Financial Field. Drew Brees went 25-for-34 with 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. His touchdown total was just half of what he accomplished against the Lions in Week 1, but it was more than enough. Mike Bell and Reggie Bush combined to rush for 119 yards and two touchdowns in the win and Marques Colston led New Orleans in receiving with 8 catches for 98 yards and two scores. The Philadelphia defense, which was dominant against the Panthers last week, struggled mightily. They sacked Brees just twice, while allowing 421 total yards. Kevin Kolb was respectable in his first NFL start for the Eagles, going 31-for-51 with 391 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. However, the team made several costly mistakes. Ellis Hobbs fumbled on the opening kickoff of the second half, allowing the Saints to take control of the game. Leading 17-13 after 30 minutes, New Orleans outscored the home team 31-9 in the third and fourth quarters. N.Y. Jets 16, New England 9 Team Trench Counter: Jets +3.8, Patriots -3.8 The New York Jets (2-0) scored the first takedown in their renewed rivalry with the New England Patriots (1-1) on Sunday. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez went 14-for-22 with 163 yards and one touchdown in the victory at Giants Stadium. Leon Washington and Thomas Jones helped make things easier for Sanchez as they combined to rush for 112 yards on 28 carries. Trailing 9-3, Sanchez connected with Dustin Keller on a 9-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the second half to put the Jets ahead for good. The Patriots settled for just three field goals on the afternoon as New York?s defense kept their high-scoring offense out of the end zone. Tom Brady went 23-for-47 with 216 yards and an interception. Julian Edelman led New England in receiving yards as he emerged as Brady?s top target in Week 2. With Wes Welker out, the rookie caught 8 passes for 98 yards in the loss. Oakland 13, Kansas City 10 Team Trench Counter: Raiders -7.3, Chiefs +7.3 JaMarcus Russell was ineffective for a majority of the game, but led the Oakland Raiders (1-1) on a game-winning drive against the Kansas City Chiefs (0-2) at Arrowhead Stadium. Russell was just 7-for-24 on the afternoon, but led the Oakland offense down the field late in the fourth quarter to set up Darren McFadden?s game-winning 5-yard touchdown run with just 1:07 minutes remaining in regulation. Matt Cassel made his Kansas City debut, going 24-for-39 with 241 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Cassel hooked up with Dwayne Bowe on a 29-yard touchdown to give the Chiefs a 10-6 lead with less than three minutes remaining. However, the score turned out to come too quickly as the Raiders had time to complete a last-minute comeback. Arizona 31, Jacksonville 17 Team Trench Counter: Cardinals +6.5, Jaguars -6.5 The Arizona Cardinals (1-1) opened up an early lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) on Sunday and never looked back at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Kurt Warner went 24-for-26 with 243 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Matt Leinart in the second half. Warner finished the game with an NFL record 92.3 completion percentage. Tim Hightower had 72 yards and a touchdown, and cornerback Antrel Rolle scored an 83-yard touchdown on a blocked field goal in the second quarter. David Garrard, who led the Jaguars on two second-half touchdown drives when the game?s outcome was already decided, was 23-for-43 with 282 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on the afternoon. In addition to the interception, Garrard lost a fumble (as did two other Jaguars). Mike Sims-Walker was Jacksonville?s offense star, grabbing 6 catches for 106 yards and a score. Arizona held Maurice Jones-Drew to 83 total yards. Cincinnati 31, Green Bay 24 Team Trench Counter: Bengals -4.2, Packers +4.2 The Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) stunned the Green Bay Packers (1-1) at Lambeau Field. Carson Palmer threw two interceptions, but finished 15-for-23 with 185 yards and three touchdowns. Cedric Benson was the star of the game for Cincinnati. He rushed for 141 yards on 29 carries against Green Bay, often putting the Bengals in prime field position. Chad Ochocinco, who promised to perform a Lambeau Leap if he reached the end zone, accomplished the feat in the third quarter. Aaron Rodgers went 21-for-39 with 261 yards and a touchdown, but the Packers struggled on the ground. Ryan Grant scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter, but he tallied just 46 yards on 14 attempts. Charles Woodson intercepted Palmer twice, including one for a touchdown in the second period, but Green Bay?s offense couldn?t take advantage of Cincinnati?s inexperienced defense. Greg Jennings, Rodgers? favorite target, failed to record a reception as he played through a wrist injury. Minnesota 27, Detroit 13 Team Trench Counter: Vikings +9.1, Lions -9.1 The Detroit Lions (0-2) jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but the Minnesota Vikings (2-0) bounced back win comfortably. Brett Favre went 23-for-27 with 155 yards and two touchdowns and Adrian Peterson ran for 92 yards and a score on 15 attempts at Ford Field. Favre spread the ball around nicely, connecting with five different receivers on three or more occasions. The Vikings scored 27 consecutive points after failing behind in the second quarter. Rookie quarterback Matt Stafford threw his first touchdown pass, an 8-yard strike to Calvin Johnson, but finished 18-for-30 with 152 yards, one score and two interceptions. Kevin Smith rushed for 83 yards on 24 carries in the loss, while also losing a fumble. Detroit?s defense got to Favre three times, but couldn?t withstand Minnesota?s 27-0 run over the second, third and fourth quarters. Atlanta 28, Carolina 20 Team Trench Counter: Falcons -2.6, Panthers +2.6 Matt Ryan led the Atlanta Falcons (2-0) past the Carolina Panthers (0-2) in a close game at the Georgia Dome. The second-year quarterback went 21-for-27 with 220 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, while Michael Turner ran for 105 yards and a score in the victory. Ryan connected with Tony Gonzalez (7 catches for 71 yards), Roddy White (6 catches for 53 yards) and Jason Snelling (one catch for 10 yards) for scores as the Falcons kept pace with the Saints in the NFC South. Jake Delhomme wasn?t as bad as we?ve come to expect, going 25-for-41 with 308 yards, one touchdown and an interception. DeAngelo Williams (79 yards and a touchdown) and Jonathan Stewart (65 yards on nine carries) helped keep some of the pressure off their quarterback. Steve Smith led Carolina in receiving with 131 yards on 8 receptions. San Francisco 23, Seattle 10 Team Trench Counter: 49ers +10.5, Seahawks -10.5 The San Francisco 49ers (2-0) knocked Matt Hasselbeck out of the game and then polished off the Seattle Seahawks (1-1) at Candlestick Park. Shaun Hill went 19-for-26 with 144 yards as Frank Gore rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Gore broke off scoring runs of 79 yards (the first quarter) and 80 yards (the third quarter) in the victory. The running back also led the team in receiving with 39 yards on five receptions. Hasselbeck went 10-for-18 with 97 yards before leaving with a rib injury. Seneca Wallace took over at quarterback for the Seahawks, tallying 127 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Seattle got almost no production from their running backs as they had just 66 yards on 23 carries on the road. Buffalo 33, Tampa Bay 20 Team Trench Counter: Bills +17.5, Buccaneers -17.5 The Buffalo Bills (1-1) jumped out to a 17-0 lead and held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2) in the second half. Fred Jackson dominated, perhaps giving himself a shot to continue starting at running back even upon Marshawn Lynch?s return from suspension. Jackson had 163 rushing yards on 28 carries, while also catching 6 passes for 25 yards. Trent Edwards threw for 230 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Terrell Owens found the end zone for the first time as a member of the Bills in the fourth quarter on a 43-yard reception. Trailing early, Byron Leftwich attempted 50 passes. He finished with 296 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Because of that, Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward rushed for just 48 yards on 11 carries. Leftwich?s leading receiver was tight end Kellen Winslow, who caught seven passes for 90 yards and a score. Baltimore 31, San Diego 26 Team Trench Counter: Ravens +6.6, Chargers -6.6 The Baltimore Ravens (2-0) are proving to be an offensive powerhouse, but it was their defense that kept the San Diego Chargers (1-1) from completing a late-game comeback. Joe Flacco had 190 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as Willis McGahee found the end zone twice on 15 rushes for 79 yards. Kelley Washington led Baltimore with four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, and linebacker Ray Lewis sealed the victory by tackling Darren Sproles on fourth down with under a minute remaining. Philip Rivers went 25-for-45 with 436 yards, two touchdowns and two costly interceptions. Without LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle), the Chargers struggled to run the ball effectively. Sproles, Michael Bennett and Jacob Hester had 48 yards on 16 carries, forcing Rivers to throw the ball on most downs at Qualcomm Stadium. Denver 27, Cleveland 6 Team Trench Counter: Broncos +20.9, Browns -20.9 The Denver Broncos (2-0) took the lead on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Orton to tight end Tony Scheffler midway through the first quarter and never looked back against the Cleveland Browns (0-2). Orton finished the afternoon with 263 yards and Denver?s stable of running backs enjoyed productive performances. Correll Buckhalter rushed 9 times for 76 yards and a touchdown and rookie Knowshon Moreno had 75 yards on 17 carries on Sunday. Brady Quinn went 18-for-31 with 161 yards and an interception, while Jamal Lewis struggled to get Cleveland?s ground game going. Lewis had 38 yards on 14 carries in a game where the Browns had just 200 total yards. Braylon Edwards, who hauled in six passes for 92 yards, was the only star for the road team. Chicago 17, Pittsburgh 14 Team Trench Counter: Bears -4.0, Steelers +4.0 Jay Cutler bounced back from his horrible debut to lead the Chicago Bears (1-1) to a big victory over the defending-champion Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1). After throwing four interceptions against the Packers in Week 1, Cutler went 27-for-38 with 236 yards and two touchdowns at Solider Field. Matt Forte was held to just 29 yards on 13 carries, but Cutler was still able to move the ball through the air. Rookie Johnny Knox was Chicago?s lead receiver with six catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Robbie Gould hit a 44-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to give the Bears the victory. Ben Roethlisberger scored on a 2-yard run in the third to put the Steelers in control, but finished the game with just 221 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Willie Parker was slightly more productive than he was in Week 1 against the Titans, rushing for 47 yards on 14 carries, but the former rushing champion still struggled. Santonio Holmes led Pittsburgh in receiving with five catches for 83 yards in the loss. N.Y Giants 33, Dallas 31 Team Trench Counter: Giants +7.6, Cowboys -7.6 The New York Giants (2-0) defeated the Dallas Cowboys (1-1) in the opener at the new billion-dollar Cowboys Stadium on Sunday night. Eli Manning led the Giants downfield on a masterful game-winning drive, which resulted in a 37-yard field goal that Lawrence Tynes had to hit twice thanks to a well-planned time out by Dallas coach Wade Phillips. Manning went 25-for-38 with 330 yards and two touchdowns. His leading receiver was Mario Manningham, who enjoyed a prime-time coming out party with 10 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Tony Romo struggled against New York's defense, passing for just 127 yards while tossing one touchdown and three interceptions. Marion Barber (124 yards and a score) and Felix Jones (96 yards and a score) excelled on the ground, but Romo ended several drives with not only his interceptions but other miscues as well. Dallas led 27-20 entering the fourth quarter, but New York outscored the home team 17-7 over the final 15 minutes. *Explaining The Trench Counter

Saints, Eagles, Seahawks And Jets Top Week 1 Rankings

May 17, 2014 7:34 AM

1. New Orleans Saints: 27.2 The Saints were universally expected of having one of the most powerful passing attacks in the NFL, but six TDs from Drew Brees and 143 yards from Mike Bell went beyond even the wildest expectations. 2. Philadelphia Eagles: 16.0 The Eagles struggled to run the ball in 2008, ranking 21st with a 4.0 yard average, but they gained 185 yards on 32 rushes (5.8 average) on Sunday against Carolina. 3. Seattle Seahawks: 14.4 Matt Hasselbeck had only one game last season in which he had a passer rating over 71.0 and that came against the Rams, so it wasn't a huge surprise when he went 25-for-36 with 279 yards and three TDs. 4. New York Jets: 13.7 The Jets haven't started the season 2-0 since 2004, but hope to do so Sunday as they catch the Patriots on short rest. 5. Baltimore Ravens: 10.0 Baltimore, like the Patriots, allowed a passer rating of over 100, but still pulled out the victory. 6. Minnesota Vikings: 9.6 Percy Harvin's line from Week 1 should become a familiar one; three receptions for 36 yards, two rushes for 22 yards and three kick returns for 99 yards. 7. Atlanta Falcons: 7.9 Matt Ryan improved his home record to 8-1 with Sunday's win over Miami; in six of those games, Ryan had a passer rating of over 90. 8. Tennessee Titans: 5.7 The Titans defensive line certainly did not miss Albert Haynesworth, even if they were facing Pittsburgh's offensive line and anemic running game. Blame Rob Bironas for being in the Trench Counter top-8 despite the 0-1 record. 9. Denver Broncos: 4.8 Kyle Orton had a 100.7 passer rating against the Bengals, but is a 75.5 rating in 'non-tipped for TD' passes. 10. Dallas Cowboys: 4.2 Tony Romo and the Cowboys averaged 22.1 yards per completed pass. 11. Indianapolis Colts: 3.2 The Indianapolis running game continues to struggle, with just 2.3 yards per carry against Jacksonville. 12. New York Giants: 3.1 Steve Smith caught six balls for 80 yards as he attempts to separate himself from the other receivers for the Plaxico Burress role. 13. New England Patriots: 3.1 The Patriots were one of three teams to complete at least 10 3rd down opportunities, but still needed a miracle to beat Buffalo. Tom Brady was at first hesitant on that knee and the way the passing game methodically chipped yards away from Buffalo effectively moved the chains, but they are still a few games away from their dominant 2007 powerhouse. 14. San Francisco 49ers: 2.4 Mike Singletary has to be happy with the win, but 0.8 yards per rush isn't the type of smash-mouth football he promised. 15. Green Bay Packers: 2.4 Despite the inefficiencies of his line, especially on the right side with Allen Barbre, Aaron Rodgers finished the game with a 92.0 passer rating. 16. Oakland Raiders: 2.3 My full Week 1 postmortem on the Raiders' loss can be read here, but one nugget I didn't include was Darris Heyward-Bey's three drops. If he ever becomes a possession receiver, I will be completely shocked and will almost strictly be effective trying to beat his man 40 yards downfield on play action when the safety cheats up. 17. San Diego Chargers: -2.3 The Chargers improved to 3-0 when Darren Sproles rushes for a touchdown, which he did on Monday with his game-winner. 18. Chicago Bears: -2.4 Jay Cutler threw at least one interception in 13 of his 16 starts in 2008 and 10 of his 16 in 2007, so it will always be a large part of his game, but he will absolutely need to avoid those interceptions that had utterly no chance of reaching their intended target. 19. Arizona Cardinals: -2.4 The 49ers' upset of the defending NFC Champions wasn't nearly as surprising as Tim Hightower's 12 receptions, which was as many as both Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Hightower finished the 2008 season with just 34 total catches. 20. Buffalo Bills: -3.1 Terrell Owens atypically offered no comment following Monday's loss after catching just two balls and one trademark drop. 21. Washington Redskins: -3.1 London Fletcher led all defensive players in Week 1 with 18 tackles. 22. Jacksonville Jaguars: -3.2 Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 6.3 yards per carry in the first half and just 3.6 yards in the second half, which could prove typical until the Jaguars find a replacement for Fred Taylor. 23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: -4.2 Cadillac Williams' 7.5 yards per rush average (even better than Peterson) on 13 carries was very nice to see as he continues his comeback from injury. 24. Cincinnati Bengals: -4.8 Cincinnati allowed just 10 1st downs by the Broncos and were a stingy 9-for-12 in stopping Kyle Orton's offense on 3rd down. 25. Pittsburgh Steelers: -5.7 The Steelers and Chargers were the only teams to win in Week 1 despite having a negative Trench Counter score. 26. Miami Dolphins: -7.9 Chad Pennington was one of 22 quarterbacks to have a passer rating over 80.0 in Week 1, which is fairly impressive given how defensive units typically are further along than the passing game at the start of the season. 27. Cleveland Browns -9.6 The Cleveland offensive line gave up five sacks to the vaunted Minnesota pass rush. 28. Kansas City Chiefs: -10.0 Ryan Succop was one of six place-kickers to knock one through the uprights from 50 or more yards out. 29. Houston Texans: -13.7 A vogue sleeper pick to reach the playoffs, by myself included, were completely inept offensively; but a lot of that can be blamed on how Darrelle Revis completely locked down the previously unlockable Andre Johnson. 30. St. Louis Rams: -14.4 While their old NFC West rival Saints scored 48 points and are on pace for 768 this season, the Rams were the only team who failed to score in Week 1. 31. Carolina Panthers: -16.0 If Jake Delhomme is looking for a silver lining heading into Week 2, it is the fact that he has five touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last three games against Atlanta. 32. Detroit Lions: -27.2 Matthew Stafford had a 27.4 passer rating in his debut, which couldn't quite compare to Matt Ryan's 137.0 and even Joe Flacco's 63.7 from 2008.

RealGM's NFL Week 1 Rundown

May 17, 2014 2:10 AM

Thankfully, NFL football is back. In addition to Thursday's Opening Night matchup between the Titans and Steelers, there were thirteen battles on Sunday. On Monday night, the league will put the cherry on top of Week One with a pair of Monday Night Football games. We will also calculate each team's Trench Counter*. Pittsburgh 13, Tennessee 10 (OT) Team Trench Counter: Steelers -5.7, Titans 5.7 Ben Roethlisberger orchestrated yet another comeback win as the defending Super Bowl champions were outplayed, but still walked away with a Week One victory. The Tennessee Titans (0-1) looked primed to spoil the party with a 10-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) tied it up with a 32-yard field goal off the foot of Jeff Reed less than three minutes before the end of regulation. Roethlisberger, who went 33-for-43 with 363 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, led the Steelers on a game-winning drive that ended with a 33-yard field goal on the first drive of overtime. Pittsburgh struggled mightily on the ground and may have lost safety Troy Polamalu for a considerable amount of time, but Super Bowl hero Santonio Holmes, nine catches for 131 yards and a touchdown, picked up right where he left off in February. Dallas 34, Tampa Bay 21 Team Trench Counter: Cowboys 4.2, Buccaneers -4.2 Tony Romo had a career day, going 16-for-27 with 353 yards and three touchdowns, as the Dallas Cowboys (1-0) handled the pesky Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1). Cadillac Williams gave the Bucs a brief 7-6 lead in the second quarter, but the Cowboys responded with back-to-back touchdowns over the second and third quarters to build a lead they would never relinquish. Even with Terrell Owens in Buffalo, Romo had no trouble making big plays. All three of his touchdown strikes were longer than forty yards (42, 66, 80), including a career-long completion to Patrick Crayton in the third period. Byron Leftwich was steady for Tampa Bay, going 25-for-41 with 276 yards and a touchdown, but the defense couldn't handle the Dallas attack. New Orleans 45, Detroit 27 Team Trench Counter: Saints 27.2, Lions -27.2 Drew Brees lit up the scoreboard with 358 passing yards and six touchdowns on Sunday, helping lead the New Orleans Saints (1-0) over the Detroit Lions (0-1), spoiling rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford's professional debut in the process. Brees had some help, getting 143 rushing yards on 28 carries from Mike Bell. Eight different New Orleans receivers caught passes and five reached the end zone (tight end Jeremy Shockey grabbed two). Stafford struggled for the Lions, who still haven't won a game since the 2007 season. The first overall pick went 16-for-37 with 205 yards and three interceptions against the far from intimidating Saints' defense. As always, receiver Calvin Johnson excelled despite shaky quarterback play in Detroit, he grabbed three passes for 90 yards in the defeat. Stafford did, however, score his first NFL touchdown. He reached the end zone on a one-yard run in the third quarter. Indianapolis 14, Jacksonville 12 Team Trench Counter: Colts 3.2, Jaguars -3.2 The Indianapolis Colts (1-0) didn't look unstoppable on offense, but they still got the job done against the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) at Lucas Oil Stadium. Peyton Manning went 28-for-38 with 301 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He connected with Reggie Wayne ten times for 162 yards and a score and the Colts' defense did the remainder of the heavy lifting. Jacksonville managed just 228 total yards, with Maurice Jones-Drew, 97 yards on 21 carries, scoring their only touchdown of the afternoon. Torry Holt had a decent debut for the Jaguars, catching three passes for 47 yards, while quarterback David Garrard went 14-for-28 with 122 passing yards in the loss. N.Y. Jets 24, Houston 7 Team Trench Counter: Jets 13.7, Texans -13.7 Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Chansi Stuckey in the second quarter and never looked back in his first professional start. The New York Jets (1-0) topped the Houston Texans (0-1) as they started a rookie in an opener for the first time since a certain Broadway Joe came to town. Thomas Jones gave Sanchez his support as well, rushing 20 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Houston had just 145 total yards of offense and their lone touchdown came via a 48-yard return by safety Dominique Barber in the fourth quarter. Matt Schaub went 18-for-33 with 166 yards and an interception and last year's rookie sensation, Steve Slaton, ran for just 17 yards on nine carries against the Jets' rejuvenated defense. Minnesota 34, Cleveland 20 Team Trench Counter: Vikings 9.6, Browns -9.6 Brett Favre was playing quarterback, but Adrian Peterson stole the show as the Minnesota Vikings (1-0) ran away from the Cleveland Browns (0-1) in the second half. Peterson, the NFL's leading rusher last season, tallied 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns at Browns Stadium. Favre did throw his first touchdown pass with the Vikings, though, a 6-yard strike that was the first score of rookie receiver Percy Harvin's career. Brady Quinn didn't look horrible against Minnesota's ball-hawking defense, but his stat line, 21-for-35 with 205 yards, one touchdown and an interception, was unimpressive. Tight end Robert Royal was the recipient of Quinn's scoring pass, while leading receiver Braylon Edwards had just one catch for 12 yards in the loss. The most exciting play of the afternoon for Cleveland came from Josh Cribbs, who didn't let his desire for a new contract keep him from returning a punt 67 yards in the second quarter. Denver 12, Cincinnati 7 Team Trench Counter: Broncos 4.8, Bengals -4.8 Brandon Stokley stole a win for the Denver Broncos (1-0) on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (0-1) as he caught a tipped pass and brought it 87 yards for the game-winning touchdown. Neither team reached the end zone through the first 59 minutes of the game, but they went back-to-back after Cedric Benson gave the Bengals a very brief 7-6 lead following a 1-yard touchdown. Less than thirty seconds later, Stokley won the game for the Broncos. They combined for more than 600 yards of total yards, but neither club was able to convert yardage into points. Denver managed just ten first downs, while Cincinnati committed a pair of turnovers on interceptions thrown by Carson Palmer. Chad Ochocinco led all receivers/running backs in yardage, catching five passes for 89 yards in the loss. Philadelphia 38, Carolina 10 Team Trench Counter: Eagles 16, Panthers -16 The defense of the Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) feasted on a still-struggling Jake Delhomme on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium. The Carolina Panthers (0-1) committed seven turnovers, five (four interceptions and a fumble) of which came from their quarterback. Carolina jumped out to a 7-0 lead after an 11-yard touchdown run by DeAngelo Williams in the first quarter, but Philadelphia responded with 31 straight points to take control of the game. The Eagles' defense, playing for the first time since the death of former defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, had five sacks, five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The victory wasn't without its negatives for Philadelphia though, as Donovan McNabb left the game in the third quarter with broken ribs. He suffered the injury on a three-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, which proved to be the final score of the game. Baltimore 38, Kansas City 24 Team Trench Counter: Ravens 10, Chiefs -10 The Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) were without quarterback Matt Cassel, but still hung with the Baltimore Ravens (1-0) for a majority of Sunday's game. The Ravens needed three fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal the deal as Joe Flacco proved that his success as a rookie quarterback was no fluke. He went 26-for-43 with 307 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Ray Rice (19 carries for 108 yards), Willis McGahee (44 yards and two total touchdowns) and Le'Ron McClain (19 yards and a score) combined to give Baltimore a very strong rushing attack. Brodie Croyle wasn't horrible, but he's still winless as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He went 16-for-24 with 177 yards and two touchdowns, but his running game betrayed him. Larry Johnson (11 carries for 20 yards) and Jamaal Charles (8 yards on four attempts) were ineffective. Baltimore's defense wasn't as potent as we've come to expect, but the offense picked the team up when needed. Atlanta 19, Miami 7 Team Trench Counter: Falcons 7.9, Dolphins -7.9 It wasn't pretty, but the Atlanta Falcons (1-0) started the 2009 season off right with an impressive win over the Miami Dolphins (0-1). Matt Ryan went 22-for-36 with 229 yards and two touchdowns, including one to new tight end Tony Gonzalez. Miami limited Michael Turner to 65 yards on 22 carries, but Atlanta got enough offense from Ryan's arm. Meanwhile, the Falcons got great production from their defense, including four sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception. The Dolphins were close to being shut out, but Ricky Williams found the end zone on a 9-yard pass from Chad Pennington in the game's final minutes. Pennington was 21-for-29 and had two turnovers (one pick and a fumble), while tight end Anthony Fasano had two catches for 10 yards and a pair of fumbles. Seattle 28, St. Louis 0 Team Trench Counter: Seahawks 14.4, Rams -14.4 Steve Spagnuolo didn't have the best debut as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams (0-1) as the resurgent Seattle Seahawks (1-0) blanked them in Jim Mora Jr.'s first game since taking over for Mike Holmgren. Matt Hasselbeck went 25-for-36 with 279 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions and Julius Jones led Seattle's rushing attack with 117 yards and a touchdown in the win. The Rams had just one turnover, a fumble by receiver Donnie Avery, but still couldn't find the end zone. Marc Bulger went 17-for-36 with 191 yards and Steven Jackson rushed 16 times for 67 yards to lead the team's anemic offense. Two of Hasselbeck's three touchdowns went to second-year tight end John Carlson, who hauled in six passes for 95 yards. N.Y. Giants 23, Washington 17 Team Trench Counter: Giants 3.1, Redskins -3.1 The New York Giants (1-0) jumped out to a 17-0 lead against the rival Washington Redskins (0-1) and held off a late charge to open the season with a victory. Eli Manning, devoid of established receivers, went 20-for-29 with 256 yards, one touchdown and an interception. New York's ground game was good, but not great, as Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs combined for 106 yards on 28 carries. Jason Campbell turned in a decent performance, going 19-for-26 with 211 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Tight end Chris Cooley, who had seven catches for 68 yards, hooked up with Campbell on the score. Clinton Portis was mostly held in check by New York's defense, contributing 62 yards on 16 rush attempts. The Giants' defense came up big when needed, recording three sacks, two forced fumbles and scoring a touchdown on a 37-yard fumble recovery by Osi Umenyiora. San Francisco 20, Arizona 16 Team Trench Counter: 49ers 2.4, Cardinals -2.4 Shaun Hill led the San Francisco 49ers (1-0) on a game-winning drive midway through the fourth quarter to beat the defending NFC champion Arizona Cardinals (0-1). Hill went 18-for-31 with 209 yards and a touchdown pass, which came on a 3-yard toss to Frank Gore with 7:26 left in regulation. Gore added 30 yards and a score on the ground as well, while Isaac Bruce led San Francisco in receiving with four catches for 74 yards. Kurt Warner took some costly chances at the University of Phoenix Stadium, going 26-for-44 with 288 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. In addition, Arizona's running game was nearly nonexistent. Rookie Chris "Beanie" Wells and Tim Hightower combined for 46 yards on fifteen rushes, while Hightower caught an astounding 12 passes for 121 yards in the loss. Larry Fitzgerald, who finished the game with six catches for 71 yards, was the only Cardinal to enter the end zone. Green Bay 21, Chicago 15 Team Trench Counter: Packers 2.4, Bears -2.4 Jay Cutler's debut with the Chicago Bears (0-1) wasn't anything close to what the Windy City expected, as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (1-0) won on a stunning 50-yard pass play. Trailing 15-13, Rodgers hooked up with Greg Jennings for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give Green Bay a season-opening win over their long-time rival. Rodgers finished the game with just 184 yards on 17-for-28 passing, but Cutler's miscues doomed the Bears. Cutler went 17-for-36 with 277 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions, including one on Chicago's final drive. He connected with Devin Hester on a pretty 36-yard score in the third quarter, but struggled to gel with his receivers for a majority of the night. The interception total was a career-high for the former Broncos quarterback, who came to the Bears in a highly-publicized trade in the offseason. New England 25, Buffalo 24 Team Trench Counter: Patriots 3.1, Bills -3.1 The Buffalo Bills (0-1) appeared primed to beat the New England Patriots (1-0) for the first time in six seasons on Monday night, recording Week One's most shocking win in the process. However, Tom Brady struck again with two magical touchdown drives in the game's final three minutes. Fred Jackson scored on a 10-yard run with 5:32 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bills a seemingly insurmountable 24-13 lead. Three minutes later, Brady connected with tight end Benjamin Watson on a 18-yard touchdown, bringing the Patriots to within five points after a failed two-point conversion. With three timeouts and the two-minute warning on their side, the Patriots kicked deep to the Bills. Leodis McKelvin, Buffalo's second-year cornerback, fumbled the kickoff after a solid return, setting New England's offense up for a dramatic drive. With just 55 seconds remaining, Brady connected with Watson once again, this time on a 16-yard touchdown, to give the Patriots the win. Their two-point conversation attempt failed, but New England's defense sacked Trent Edwards twice to end Buffalo's attempt at a comeback of their own. San Diego 24, Oakland 20 Team Trench Counter: Chargers -2.3, Raiders 2.3 Darren Sproles scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run with 18 seconds remaining to give the San Diego Chargers (1-0) a dramatic win over the Oakland Raiders (0-1) in the second game of a Monday Night Football double-header. The Raiders thought they had the game won after JaMarcus Russell hooked up with Louis Murphy on a 57-yard pass with 2:34 left in regulation, but Philip Rivers led the Chargers down the field for the game-winning score. Rivers, who led the NFL in quarterback rating last season, went 24-for-36 with 252 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the victory. LaDainian Tomlinson had 55 yards and a touchdown, while Oakland's running duo of Darren McFadden and Michael Bush combined for 123 rushing yards and a score. Both Tomlinson and McFadden lost fumbles at the Oakland Coliseum. Tight ends Zach Miller (six catches for 96 yards) and Antonio Gates (five catches for 83 yards) led their respective teams in receiving. *Explaining The Trench Counter
