Mike McDaniel Explains Why Dolphins Didn't Go For Record 73 Points

Sep 25, 2023 8:42 AM

The Miami Dolphins thrashed the Denver Broncos 70-20 on Sunday, tying the record for the fourth-most points ever scored in an NFL game.

The Dolphins hit the 70-point mark with roughly eight minutes left to play.

After a failed drive by the Broncos, Miami got the ball back knowing that if they scored a touchdown, they would break the NFL record for most points ever scored in a game.

They also knew that if they just kicked a field goal, they would get to 73 points, which would tie the NFL record for the most points ever scored in a game.

Even though the Dolphins had their backups in, they still managed to get into Denver territory thanks to a 52-yard run by Chris Brooks. The big gain put the Dolphins at Denver's 23-yard line with just over two minutes remaining.

At that point, it would have been pretty simple for the Dolphins to get at least a field goal out of the drive, but Mike McDaniel decided to take the high road. Instead of going for the record, McDaniel called for three runs up the middle to make it fourth down, and instead of attempting the field goal, he called for a kneel down that ended Miami's possession.

"I'm very okay with the decision, and I think the team, notably the leaders of the team supported it, the captains supported it," McDaniel said. "It's not the way you want to get the record. I would hope that if the shoe was on the other foot, the opponent would feel the same way. That's called karma. I'm trying to keep good karma with the Miami Dolphins."

Dolphins Score 70 Points In Record Day

Sep 25, 2023 12:16 AM

Dolphins running back De'Von Achane had a few text messages to answer after Sunday's 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos. Actually, it was closer to 100, the rookie clarified.

In the first prominent role of his career, the third-round pick compiled 233 total yards and four touchdowns, including 203 rushing yards on 18 carries.

In one of the most lopsided games in NFL history, the Dolphins put up 726 yards as the league's best offense went berserk in its home opener. The point total marked a new franchise record and the most points any NFL team has scored since Washington scored 72 against the New York Giants in 1966.

Tyreek Hill Calls Out Pats Fans As Some Of NFL's 'Worst'

Sep 18, 2023 9:10 AM

After the Miami Dolphins' 24-17 win at Gillette Stadium on Sunday night, Tyreek Hill called New England Patriots fans "some of the worst fans in the NFL."

Hill, who has a history with fans in New England, was asked how it felt to wave goodbye to the home crowd, and he did not hold back.

"It felt tremendous, man," Hill said. "Those fans are some of the worst fans in the NFL. And I'm going to stand on that; they are real nasty. Some of the things they were saying, I wouldn't say in church. So yeah, it felt great to wave goodbye to the fans, and I'll do it again. Bye."

A man at Gillette Stadium was charged with disorderly conduct in 2018 after throwing beer on Hill following his 70-yard touchdown reception while he was still a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. The man was also banned from future events at the stadium.

Troy Aikman Nearly Came Out Of Retirement To Join Dolphins In 2003

Sep 6, 2023 8:03 AM

Troy Aikman told Adam Schefter on his podcast that he nearly came out of retirement to play quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in 2003.

Aikman retired after the 2000 season with the Dallas Cowboys.

"I had a chance initially and I was gonna do it quite honestly," Aikman told Schefter. "I was gonna come back and the Dolphins were looking at me. Dave Wannstedt was the head coach. Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator. I had trained that offseason, prepared to come back and play. And they felt like they were a quarterback away from achieving what they wanted to do."

Both Turner and Wannstedt had been with the Cowboys during Aikman's run with the team.

"So, I was gonna do it," Aikman said of coming out of retirement. "I thought, 'Well, I'll give it a shot.' Rick Spielman was the [senior vice president of football operations] and he ultimately was the one, I believe, that decided not to sign me, which was probably a good thing from their perspective. And it was a great thing from my perspective because they weren't a quarterback away. ... They were not very good. It all worked out just fine."

Dolphins Name Mike White QB2 Behind Tua Tagovailoa

Sep 5, 2023 8:30 AM

The Miami Dolphins have named Mike White the No. 2 quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa after a monthslong competition with Skylar Thompson.

Miami signed White to a two-year, $8 million contract this offseason with $4.5 million guaranteed. Thompson was a seventh-round pick in 2022.

Since becoming the Dolphins' starter during the 2020 season, Tagovailoa has yet to play a full season because of injuries, appearing in 13 games each of the past two years.
