Panthers Name Marty Hurney General Manager

Feb 21, 2018 11:19 AM

The Carolina Panthers have named Marty Hurney their general manager.

Hurney has been serving as interim general manager following the firing of Dave Gettleman last season.

“We are very fortunate to have Marty as our general manager after he did an exceptional job in the interim role this past season,” Panthers COO Tina Becker said in a statement. “Marty’s guidance and vision helped build the foundation for this team, and his work this season was instrumental in returning the team to the playoffs. We believe he will continue to craft a roster that will win games and contend for a championship.”

The Panthers are in the process of being sold, which makes Hurney's long-term job prospects uncertain.

Hurney was previously general manager of the Panthers for 10 years until 2012.

Marty Hurney Cleared By NFL, Reinstated By Panthers

Feb 19, 2018 7:20 AM

Marty Hurney has been reinstated as the interim general manager of the Carolina Panthers after the NFL informed the team that a two-week investigation revealed no evidence that Hurney harassed his ex-wife.

According to a league source, Hurney remains the front-runner to be named Carolina's full-time GM.

Hurney was placed on paid administrative leave three days after Jeanne Hurney filed the complaint in a Charlotte court on Feb. 2. The complaint was withdrawn four days later.

Panthers QB Coach: Cam Newton 'Doesn't Need Changing'

Feb 16, 2018 10:36 AM

The Carolina Panthers don't want Cam Newton to change the way he plays.

New quarterbacks coach Scott Turner doesn't want to see Newton's unique talents going to waste.

"What he has done has really refined his game, really become a pro, but he's going to play his way," Turner said. "He's going to run -- that's what makes him the dynamic player he is -- but also making the throws in the pocket, going through his reads. All of those things come from experience, and he's played seven seasons now."

Newton has struggled with fits of inaccuracy during his career. For his career, he has a 58.5 completion percentage. The past two seasons he averaged a 56 percent completion rate on 1,002 pass attempts.

"A lot of things go into that -- your eyes, your feet and ultimately your decision making. If you can get those three things down in regards to your completion percentage, a lot of times instead of trying to make the high-degree-of-difficulty throw, you can get the ball to the back or tight end," Turner said. "He doesn't need changing; he just needs to be the best version of Cam Newton."

Marty Hurney On Paid Leave After Harassment Complaint

Feb 7, 2018 8:39 AM

The Carolina Panthers have placed interim general manager Marty Hurney on paid administrative league following a complaint of harassment by his ex-wife.

Jeanne Hurney filed the complaint Friday but has since withdrawn it after the judge who heard the complaint denied a temporary restraining order.

Marty Hurney, who interviewed for the full-time GM job last week, informed the team of the complaint Sunday, and the team then informed the league office.

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said the league will investigate Hurney's situation under its personal conduct policy.
