Bills Hire Perry Fewell To Be Defensive Coordinator

Oct 27, 2014 3:40 PM

The Buffalo Bills hired Perry Fewell as defensive coordinator, according to a published report Tuesday in the Buffalo News. Fewell will replace Jerry Gray, the Bills defensive co-ordinator since 2001. Gray was fired Monday. Under Gray, Buffalo finished with the No. 2 defence in 2003 and 2004 before slipping to 29th this season. The Bills were the last team in the league to hire a defensive co-ordinator. Fewell, who's never been a co-ordinator, becomes the fourth assistant hired by Dick Jauron. Jauron was named head coach a week ago after Mike Mularkey abruptly resigned earlier in the month.

Fairchild Named Bills Offensive Coordinator

Sep 8, 2014 9:02 PM

Steve Fairchild is back with the Buffalo Bills, hired as the team's offensive coordinator Wednesday and given the task of improving one of the NFL's worst offenses. Fairchild, who spent the past three seasons as the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator, broke into the NFL as the Bills' running backs coach in 2001-02. He becomes the second assistant hired by Dick Jauron, named head coach Monday. The former Chicago Bears head coach replaced Mike Mularkey, who abruptly resigned two weeks ago.

Jauron Offered Job By Bills

Sep 23, 2014 12:24 AM

Former Chicago Bears coach Dick Jauron will be offered the head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills, team sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Sunday. One team source said that Jauron should be named by Monday once the Bills complete the contract negotiations. Jauron was selected by Bills owner Ralph Wilson and GM Marv Levy from a group that included former Packers coach Mike Sherman, former Texans coach Dom Capers, and current Colts assistant coach Jim Caldwell. Jauron told the Associated Press that he was, in fact, in Buffalo, but declined to comment, referring questions to the team. Officially, Levy was also unavailable for comment on the Bills coaching vacancy. Jauron went 35-46 in five seasons with the Bears and was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2001, following a 13-3 finish.

Mularkey Offered Offensive Coordinator Job In Miami

Jul 28, 2014 6:36 AM

Former Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey has been offered the job as offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, a person close to the discussions said Saturday. Mularkey met with Dolphins coach Nick Saban, then flew home to Buffalo on Saturday to decide whether to accept the job, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not confirmed the offer. Scott Linehan, Saban's offensive coordinator last season, departed Thursday to become coach of the St. Louis Rams.

Capers To Interview With Bills

Sep 8, 2014 8:52 PM

As team officials approach the completion of the interview process, Dom Capers, who has served as head coach for two expansion franchises, will meet with the Buffalo Bills on Friday about the club's vacancy, ESPN.com has learned. Recently dismissed as the Houston Texans' head coach, Capers posted an 18-46 record in four seasons (2002-2005), including a league-worst 2-14 mark this year. He was 31-35 in four seasons (1995-98) with the Carolina Panthers. Capers was the first head coach in the history of both former expansion teams. In only the second season of the franchise's existence, Capers led the Panthers to the NFC Championship Game in 1996. He was unable to register the same kind of results, though, in Houston, where the Texans never won more than seven games under his stewardship, and regressed badly in 2005. Capers, 55, will be the third former NFL head coach to huddle with Bills officials about the opening created when Mike Mularkey abruptly resigned last week after only two seasons on the job. Earlier this week, the Bills met with former Chicago Bears coach Dick Jauron and onetime Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman.

Lions Coach Interviews For Buffalo Post

Jun 15, 2014 11:33 AM

Interim Detroit Lions coach Dick Jauron interviewed for the Buffalo job Tuesday, the second candidate to talk to the Bills since coach Mike Mularkey's resignation last week. Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold did not provide any details of Jauron's interview. Jauron is considered a strong candidate for the Buffalo job because he has previous NFL head coaching experience and is close to Marv Levy, the Hall of Fame coach hired by the Bills last week as general manager. Levy maintains a home in Chicago and broadcast Bears games while Jauron was the team's coach through 2003. Jauron, a former Pro Bowl safety, also had a brief connection with Buffalo, beginning his professional coaching career as a Bills defensive backs assistant in 1985.

Levy Not Ruling Himself Out As Coaching Candidate

Sep 21, 2014 5:59 AM

Coach Mike Mularkey's abrupt resignation came as a shock to the Buffalo Bills. An even bigger surprise might be who refused to rule himself out as a candidate for the job -- Marv Levy. A week after taking over as the Bills general manager, and despite owner Ralph Wilson insisting Levy wouldn't be considered to replace Mularkey, the 80-year-old Hall of Fame coach declined to say he wasn't interested. "I really, sort of, don't even want to comment," Levy said Friday at a news conference. "I can't answer it because I want to talk the whole situation over. But we're going to address it swiftly." Levy added that he didn't plan on being the coach when he accepted the GM's job, but said the situation has changed with Mularkey's unexpected departure. His comments, however, contradicted what Wilson stated minutes earlier after announcing Mularkey's resignation. Asked whether Levy, who was standing off to the side, would be a candidate, Wilson said: "Absolutely not."

Mularkey Resigns, Bills Searching For Head Coach

Nov 10, 2014 11:03 AM

Nearly every NFL offseason includes at least one unexpected head coach departure, and on Thursday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills' Mike Mularkey provided the surprise factor for this year's cycle of firings and hirings. In a lengthy meeting with Bills management, Mularkey stunned owner Ralph Wilson and newly appointed general manager Marv Levy by tendering his resignation after only two seasons on the job, ESPN.com confirmed. His departure will be confirmed by the Bills at a Friday news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. Team officials declined comment on Thursday evening. Sources close to Mularkey said Thursday night that he has already left Buffalo. Wilson and Levy were said to have been taken aback when Mularkey contacted them Wednesday and acknowledged he was mulling his resignation.

Mularky Looking To Resign

Oct 31, 2014 2:19 PM

Although he may still be talked into staying on the job, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen and ESPN.com on Thursday that Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey was in an afternoon meeting with high-ranking team officials that could lead to his resignation. It is believed that the meeting includes Bills owner Ralph Wilson and newly-appointed general manager Marv Levy. Sources said that, because of family considerations, Mularkey intended to walk away after only two seasons, but felt that he needed to meet with Bills management before he formally tendered his resignation. Mularkey had lengthy meetings with Wilson last week as the Bills owner dramatically reshuffled the football operation.

Marv Levy Back In Buffalo

Sep 23, 2014 12:27 AM

Marv Levy is back in football and feels like a newcomer. Referring to himself as "an 80-year-old rookie," the Hall of Fame coach returned to the Buffalo Bills franchise he led to an unprecedented four straight Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s, eagerly accepting the position of general manager Thursday. "My enthusiasm is unbounded," Levy said. "It's not just to get back into the mainstream of the football world but to do it with the Buffalo Bills, for whom I have such a longtime affection."
