Browns 'Floated' Trade For Russell Wilson Before 2018 NFL Draft

May 14, 2020 6:12 PM

The Cleveland Browns "floated" the possibility of acquiring Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks for the top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Seahawks were starting at another extension for Wilson at the time.

Wilson currently has a no-trade clause and is contract will expire after the 2023 season.

Some close to the situation believe Wilson will eventually be traded.

Trevor Lawrence, Penei Sewell Headline Mel Kiper's 2021 Big Board

May 5, 2020 4:30 PM

Mel Kiper Jr. unsurprisingly has Trevor Lawrence as his top projected prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Lawrence will be a true junior in 2020 and is widely expected to be the top overall pick in 2021.

Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell ranks second, followed by Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and Penn State outside linebacker Micah Parsons.

Trey Lance of North Dakota State is the third quarterback on the list at 15th overall.

49ers Would Have Been Comfortable Taking Brandon Aiyuk At No. 13

May 4, 2020 8:43 AM

The San Francisco 49ers entered the first round of last month's NFL Draft with picks No. 13 and 31, but after multiple trades they ended up with the 14th and 25th selections.

John Lynch says Brandon Aiyuk, who they took at the No. 25 pick, was a strong consideration when they held the 13th pick.

"I think it was two days before the draft, I said to Kyle [Shanahan], you know what? I know people might raise some eyebrows, but I really don't care. At 13, if we get stuck and we can't trade out, I'd be perfectly happy taking Aiyuk," Lynch said of the Arizona State wide receiver.

"And he said, I'm so glad you said that 'cause I feel the same way! I think we knew at that point that he had really become a guy that we had become intrigued with. I think the combination of strength and speed and separation ability and then the advantage, I think in a year like this, you have to trust relationships more than ever before. [Arizona State coach] Herm Edwards, he's the godparent to my youngest daughter. I'm his son's godparent. He coached me for a long time. One of my closest friends in the world. I called Herm and I said, 'Herm, give me the skinny on this kid.' One of the things he talked about is just how competitive and how important it was for Brandon to be great. That spoke to me and spoke to us."

Packers Picking Jordan Love Was More GM Than Coach

May 3, 2020 12:53 PM

The Green Bay Packers created a lot of drama when they drafted Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft last week.

The latest report indicates the selection was influenced more by general manager Brian Gutekunst than coach Matt LaFleur.

"Matt was on the [phone] line with us and understood where I was coming from," Gutekunst said of the pick. "I think it was one of those things where, again, with a second-year head coach, I certainly wasn't going to give him a player he didn't want. ....

"It's not something we anticipated. It kind of fell to us, and we were excited about that. I know a lot of people will look at this as not a move for the immediate, and I understand that, but the balance of the immediate and the long term is something that I have to consider, and that’s why we did it."
