Alabama's Henry Ruggs Runs 4.27 In 40-Yard Dash

Feb 28, 2020 7:50 AM

Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs flashed excellent speed at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday, but didn't set the record he had hoped for in Indianapolis.

Ruggs officially ran 4.27 in his first attempt at the 40-year-dash, and followed with an unofficial 4.31.

John Ross ran a 4.22-second 40-yard dash in 2017, which is considered the record in the combine's electronic timing format that began in 1999. Bo Jackson's hand-timed 4.12 in 1986 has long been considered the best time.

Chase Young Declares Himself Best Player In 2020 NFL Draft

Feb 27, 2020 9:31 PM

Chase Young believes he is the best player in the 2020 NFL Draft.

"That first day at [training] camp, when I step on the field, I want to be the best player I can be. I don't want to waste time trying to be a combine athlete,'' Young said Thursday. "I need to know I put my best foot forward trying to be the best player I can be."

Joe Burrow will almost certainly be the top pick in the draft, but Young feels he's the better player.

"I definitely think I'm the best player in the draft,'' Young said. "I think I showed on my tape, you can look at every game, I think I showed [it]. I think I put my best foot forward this year. ... I think I bring a lot to the table, the whole package as a defensive end.''

Giants Open To Moving Down From 4th Slot In Draft

Feb 25, 2020 3:33 PM

The New York Giants are open to moving down from the fourth position in the draft.

The Detroit Lions, who own the third pick, have taken a similar position.

"Absolutely we're open for business," Dave Gettleman said on Tuesday at the NFL combine. "Again, whatever we do is going to be in our best interest. Trading back has its danger. What happens if ... we're at four. Let's say we trade back to eight. There are only four players that we like. What if they're all gone? Now what are you going to do? Trade back again? You can trade yourself back out of good players.

"But, to answer your question, we're open."

The Giants presumably already have their quarterback of the future in Daniel Jones.

"I've tried to trade back as the general manager," Gettleman said. "The value wasn't there. There was a player we really liked."

Joe Burrow Confirms He'll Play For Bengals If Drafted

Feb 25, 2020 11:36 AM

Joe Burrow confirmed he plans to play for the Cincinnati Bengals if they select him first overall in April's draft.

"I'm not going to not play," Burrow told a throng of reporters at the NFL combine on Tuesday morning inside the Indiana Convention Center. "I'm a ballplayer. Whoever takes me, I'm going to go show up."

Burrow's previous comments have been noncommittal. Burrow said the hesitancy was because he didn't want to be presumptuous about what the Bengals were doing with the top pick.

"That's why I've been noncommittal, because I don't know what's going to happen," Burrow said. "They might not pick me. They might fall in love with someone else.

"You guys kind of took that narrative and ran with it, but there's never been anything like that from my end."

Joe Burrow's hand size was measured at nine inches.

The hand size was tied for the smallest among first round quarterbacks measured at the combine since 2008. Ryan Tannehill and Jared Goff were the others with that hand size.

Of the 35 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2008, the average hand size has been 9 7/10 inches.

NFL Moving More Towards Position-Less Player Profiles

Feb 24, 2020 11:18 AM

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are tow teams that have been using defensive players at multiple spots freely as a matter of strategy. The Kansas City Chiefs also use Tyrann Mathieu all over the back of their defense.

Isaiah Simmons of Clemson is a safety/inside linebacker/outside linebacker and played more than 100 snaps at four different positions, which is part of the reason why he could be selected in the top-10 of the draft.

“Are we heading toward the position-less player profile as we go into the future? That’s where I think it’s going,” Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network said. “And I think guys like Isaiah Simmons have tremendous value. I’ve talked to a couple defensive coordinators around the league about this and they see it. It’s like the way the NBA went. You just want to get as many tall, long, explosive guys on the field as you can. And some weeks you might deploy them differently than others.”
