Bryce Petty Believes He's Best Quarterback In Draft

Jan 23, 2015 6:55 PM

Bryce Petty of Baylor believes he's the best quarterback prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Most scouts prefer either Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston.

"I feel like I'm No. 1. I really do," Petty told newsday.com from Mobile, Ala., where he is preparing to play in Saturday's Reese's Senior Bowl. "That's not a cocky thing, it's not an arrogant thing. It's just me being confident in what I do and understanding that I have a learning curve [to adjust to]."

Petty ran a shotgun spread attack at Baylor.

"Those (scouts) are good at what they do, but I'm good at what I do," he said. "And I understand that my capabilities and potential for learning an NFL offense are sky-high."

49ers Could Consider Lane Kiffin For Offensive Coordinator Job

Jan 17, 2015 3:12 PM

Lane Kiffin could be a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator position.

According to a source, Kiffin might consider returning to the NFL.

Kiffin has been coaching in college since his firing as head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2008. Kiffin is currently offensive coordinator at Alabama.

“For Coach (Nick) Saban to afford me this opportunity to come here for myself and to be able to be the offensive coordinator is one thing,” Kiffin told reporters at the Sugar Bowl, “… to learn from somebody like him and his process, shoot, I would have done it for free. I would have paid him for it, like most people would.

"So it’s been a great experience for myself to see here’s what probably is the best system in college football right now as far as performing year in, year out and how he does that and be able to learn that, and what you’ve already learned from a different system in our first time at USC under Pete Carroll, which had a great run there, and how different the opportunity to be able to experience both of those, I don’t know how you could ask for a better opportunity and to have a better opportunity that he gave me last January.”

Penn State Gets Joe Paterno's 111 Vacated Wins Back

Jan 16, 2015 1:12 PM

All of Joe Paterno's 111 wins, plus one under an interim coach, that were vacated between 1998 and 2011 will be restored and consent decree between the NCAA and Penn State has been invalidated, according to ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr.

A settlement in Pennsylvania Senate majority leader Jake Corman's suit against the NCAA was reached Friday, and as a result, Paterno will once again be the winningest coach in major college football history with 409 victories.

Corman and state Treasurer Rob McCord had sued the NCAA over Penn State's punishment by the NCAA in the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

The developments follow the NCAA's decision last year to reinstate the school's full complement of football scholarships and let Penn State participate in post-season play.

Marcus Mariota, Cardale Jones Undecided On NFL Following Game

Jan 13, 2015 10:52 AM

Marcus Mariota and Cardale Jones each said after Monday's national championship that they're unsure if they'll declare for the 2015 NFL Draft.

Entering Monday night's game, Mariota said he would trade the Heisman Trophy he won this season for a national championship because the team honor was more important to the Oregon Ducks' junior quarterback.

"I'm sure it will weigh in a little bit, but there's a lot of other things that have to play into that decision," Mariota said about the loss. "There's starting grad school, coming back for another year to improve, there's a lot of other things that could bring me back. It's just not specifically this loss."

Jones, a third-year sophomore, is also eligible to enter the draft. Jones played very well in three games as a starter and there's no guarantee he would be Ohio State's starter next season.
