Jim Harbaugh's Based Salary At Michigan Worth $5M Annually

Dec 30, 2014 8:34 PM

Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett said Tuesday during Jim Harbaugh's introductory press conference that Harbaugh signed a seven-year deal worth $5 million per year, which is the same salary he earned with the San Francisco 49ers with deferred compensation.

Hackett also said Harbaugh received a $2 million signing bonus and "insisted that he not be the highest-paid coach in college football, or even the Big Ten."

"A year from now, I will review the football program's progress and the university will determine an appropriate deferred compensation arrangement, which I have to take into account market conditions at that time."

Reports broke earlier this month that Michigan was offering Harbaugh a contract worth $8 million annually.

While his salary will be $5 million, there will be incentives, and the total package still could be around $8 million annually.

Despite reports of a deal in place between Jim Harbaugh and Michigan, the Oakland Raiders plan to pursue him as soon as the season ends.

While still under contract to the 49ers through 2015, Harbaugh is not allowed to talk to other NFL teams, but the 49ers can grant that permission if they choose.

Harbaugh was pursued by Texas last offseason and turned down Michigan in the past.

Jimbo Fisher has agreed upon an eight-year contract with Florida State through the 2022 season.

Fisher is 58-10 over five seasons at Florida State.

Salary terms were not disclosed because contract details are still being worked out, but a source told ESPN.com's Chris Low that the deal is worth an average of $5.5 million a year.

"I am pleased that we have been able to secure Coach Fisher as our head coach for the long term," athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a statement. "The commitment we are making to him is a reflection of the outstanding job he has done in leading our program to its current level of excellence. While we are delighted with the undefeated season this year and our upcoming appearance in the inaugural College Football Playoff, we began working on this new contract before the success of this past season was in full view. It is a great day for Florida State."
