Andre Dixon ran for a career-high 189 yards, and Connecticut used a late goal-line stand to upset No. 11 South Florida 22-15, Saturday, the Huskies' first-ever win over a ranked opponent. The victory keeps UConn (7-1, 3-0 Big East) in sole possession of first place in the Big East and all but assures them of the first Top-25 ranking the program's history. South Florida (6-2, 1-2), which was ranked No. 2 just two weeks ago, has lost two straight.

Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree set the NCAA freshman record for receptions in a season Saturday with a 19-yard touchdown catch in the Red Raiders' 31-26 loss to Colorado. Crabtree caught his 99th pass when Graham Harrell hit him in the corner of the end zone to pull Tech within 31-19 late in the third quarter. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound redshirt freshman overtook the 98 catches by former Tech running back Taurean Henderson in 2002. The TD catch also gave him the Big 12 season record with 18, surpassing the mark set by Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods in 2002.

Oregon can start seriously thinking about a national title run. As for USC, just winning the Pac-10 could be a long shot at this point. Jonathan Stewart ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns and the fifth-ranked Ducks knocked off No. 9 USC 24-17 on Saturday. Dennis Dixon completed 16 of 25 passes for 157 yards. He also ran for 76 yards and a touchdown for Oregon. The Ducks, who came into the game ranked second nationally in total offense, had 399 yards against the Trojans.

Put that comeback at the top of Matt Ryan's Heisman resume. Ryan threw a 24-yard touchdown pass on the run and across the field to Andre Callender with 11 seconds left, and No. 2 Boston College remained undefeated with an improbable 14-10 victory over No. 8 Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

With its toughest test yet just days away, Boston College moved into second-place behind Ohio State in the BCS standings Sunday. Don't look back BC, third-place LSU gained ground this week and two Pac-10 teams are primed to pounce if the teams ahead of them falter. With BC playing at Virginia Tech, which is eighth in the standings, on Thursday night, the Eagles stay at No. 2 could be as short as South Florida's. The Hokies are the highest ranked team BC has faced this season.

Matt Flynn threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Byrd with a second left to lift fifth-ranked LSU to a 30-24 victory over No. 18 Auburn on Saturday night. With South Florida losing earlier in the week, LSU is certain to move up to at least third in the BCS standings, behind only Ohio State and possibly Boston College, which was idle this weekend.

Nate Longshore's return wasn't enough to get the California Golden Bears back on the winning track. Having Patrick Cowan back did the trick for UCLA. With Cal in UCLA territory, Alterraun Verner intercepted Longshore's pass and sprinted 76 yards to the end zone with 1:33 remaining to seal Saturday's 30-21 victory over the No. 10 Bears.

Quarterback Jack Elway, son of NFL Hall of Famer John Elway, has verbally committed to playing for Arizona State, the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday. The younger Elway has thrown for 1,677 yards and 21 touchdowns this season at Cherry Creek High School in suburban Denver. He visited Arizona State last weekend, watching the unbeaten Sun Devils beat Washington 44-20.

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson had no doubt how his Commodores would react, even if many others did, following last week's disheartening loss to Georgia. "It made us a little angry," he said. And Vanderbilt took it out on coach Steve Spurrier and No. 6 South Carolina on Saturday with a 17-6 victory. The win was Vanderbilt's first over Spurrier in 15 tries and the highest-ranked opponent it defeated in more than 70 years.

USC's football team, coaches and staff endured several terrifying minutes as their chartered flight to South Bend plummeted amid a severe thunderstorm, forcing the pilot to abort his first landing attempt. About 125 people, including 82 players, coach Pete Carroll and most of the coaching staff faced a harrowing end to their trip across the country for Saturday's game. "There was a moment there when I was thinking, 'This is it,' " Dennis Slutak, USC's director of football operations, told The Los Angeles Times.
