Terp Gaither Will Enter Supplemental Draft

Oct 10, 2014 2:41 AM

Maryland tackle Jared Gaither will apply for next month's NFL supplemental draft, the school announced yesterday. The decision comes a week after Gaither was declared academically ineligible for the 2007 season and concludes the gargantuan lineman's career with the Terrapins. "It's a decision he's put a lot of thought into," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said in a statement. "He's expressed a desire to get his degree, but I think the opportunity to make a living and the chance to be successful at the next level was a deciding factor. We wish him the best of luck and hope he achieves success in the NFL and in life."

Dec 2, 2014 6:07 PM

Jane Hoeppner wanted her husband to have one last game day. So players dressed in their white jerseys and red sweat pants, met at Assembly Hall and even got a pep talk from the coach's wife. But when Terry Hoeppner couldn't lead them across the parking lot to the football stadium, his spirit did. Players, coaches, friends and colleagues gathered Saturday for a farewell to the coach who spent two seasons reinvigorating Indiana football. Hoeppner, 59, died Tuesday from complications of a brain tumor.

Saban Accused Of Mistreating Players

Oct 25, 2014 7:10 AM

Nick Saban, who quit the Dolphins in January to coach the Crimson Tide, has been accused by quarterback Jimmy Barnes' father of mistreating his players. John Barnes, a longtime high school football coach in Southern California, said his son left the team because of the way he was treated -- not a lack of playing time. ''To be honest with you, it's the way [Saban] is treating kids,'' John Barnes told The Birmingham News. ``What Jim told Saban was he was not going to give up his dignity and be treated like that.'' Saban infamously made former Dolphins defensive tackle Manuel Wright cry on the practice field during training camp in 2005. Wright left the team a year later, citing depression and constant disagreements with Saban.
