South Florida Upsets West Virginia

Oct 10, 2014 3:01 AM

Hundreds of jubilant students vaulted from a wall behind the north end zone, ignoring the public address announcer's plea to celebrate in the stands rather than storm the field. No. 18 South Florida is not only basking in the national spotlight, the Bulls are thriving in it. "It doesn't get much better than this," USF safety Nate Allen said after Friday night's 21-13 upset of No. 5 West Virginia. "It's a great feeling. Words can't describe it."

Report: Ex-Irish QB Jones Chooses U. Of Cincinnati

Oct 10, 2014 3:02 AM

The Demetrius Jones saga has led to Cincinnati, where on Thursday the former Notre Dame quarterback told football coach Brian Kelly he wants to enroll at the university and play for the Bearcats, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. "My whole point of going to Notre Dame was the same reason I committed here," Jones said, according to the newspaper. "The atmosphere on campus, they've got top-notch facilities. They've got a head coach who's been coaching for 16 years, and the offense. I can put some of my best qualities on display. I just think it was a perfect fit."

Irish 0-4 For The First Time In 119 Seasons

Oct 10, 2014 3:00 AM

Notre Dame's offense got into the end zone-- twice, in fact. It wasn't nearly enough to end the misery for the Fighting Irish. For the first time in 119 seasons of Notre Dame football, the Irish are 0-4. Michigan State, which blew a big lead to Notre Dame a year ago in a loss that sent its season in a tailspin, got a measure of revenge against the floundering Fighting Irish with a 31-14 victory Saturday.

Florida State LB Tasered After Bar Fight

Feb 11, 2014 7:46 PM

Two Florida State football players were suspended Friday after they were arrested after an altercation at a bar. Junior linebacker Geno Hayes and senior fullback Joe Surratt were arrested early Friday at a bar near the Florida State campus, police and school officials said. Police said Hayes had to be subdued with a Taser and Surratt struck a police officer. Surratt, 21, was charged with a felony count of battery on an officer. Hayes, 20, faces three misdemeanor charges of assault on an officer, resisting arrest without violence and disorderly conduct, Tallahassee police spokesman David McCranie said. "The student-athletes have been suspended per our athletics department student-athlete code of conduct policy, until all of the facts of the incident are reviewed," Florida State Athletics Director Dave Hart said in a statement.

Irish Likely To Give Jones A Release From Scholarship

Oct 11, 2014 8:03 AM

Notre Dame might release Demetrius Jones from his scholarship, after all, as long as the sophomore quarterback transfers to a school that is not on the Irish football schedule. Jones, who started the season opener, quit the team last week and told reporters he had enrolled at Northern Illinois. On Wednesday, athletic director Kevin White said Jones wouldn't be released from his scholarship. In a statement Thursday night, however, White said the university has offered to help Jones find an acceptable school.

Top Prep Player To Commit To Florida?

Oct 11, 2014 8:09 AM

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City) all-around star Will Hill took his official visit to Gainesville, Fla., last Saturday and watched from the stands as the Gators thrashed Tennessee 59-20. On Thursday, he is expected to announce his intent to suit up for the Gators next season, much to the chagrin of the USC Trojans, who he was previously scheduled to visit this weekend. "I went to the Rutgers-Louisville game last year, but I had never seen anything like this," said Hill of the weekend visit, when reached by phone on Tuesday. "The atmosphere at Florida, from the fans and alumni, showed how serious they take football and how much they love the game. I knew my dad would be hyped, but even my mom was jumping around doing the Gator chomp!"

Bowden Clarifies Jabs At Carr

Oct 10, 2014 5:06 PM

Tommy Bowden telephoned Michigan coach Lloyd Carr earlier this week to clarify comments perceived as jabs by several national media outlets. After Clemson beat Furman last weekend, Bowden told reporters: ?We won. That?s not something Lloyd Carr can say,? a reference to the Wolverines? season-opening upset loss to Appalachian State. Bowden seemed to make the statement in the context of relief, that the Tigers had defeated a quality championship subdivision opponent. But he later received a printout of the article from the Detroit Free Press Web site entitled, ?Bowden Rips Carr.? ?I was shocked,? Bowden said. ?Appalachian State and Furman are rivals, so it would be very natural for me to make a comparison. I guess people in that part of the country are not familiar with the Appalachian State-Furman rivalry and how close it?s been.?
