Doucet Happy He Stayed In School

Jul 2, 2014 7:50 AM

Wide receiver Early Doucet could have joined the all-out blitz on the NFL draft by LSU players in April. Instead, he's the senior statesman in the LSU passing attack on a team that appears to be in position to contend for a national championship. "We (LSU Coach Les Miles) talked, but I wasn't concerned about that," Doucet said at SEC media days Friday. "I knew from the get-go I was coming back to LSU for my senior season, so there weren't any thoughts about leaving early for the draft. "The main thing was to get a degree, and I love college football. I don't want to leave just yet. I have the opportunity to come back for another full season of playing in Tiger Stadium. You don't want to let go of those memories, those opportunities."

LSU's Miles Apologizes For Comments

Oct 23, 2014 1:13 AM

Les Miles, normally a shy and reserved guy, has been talking a little smack this offseason. On Friday, the LSU coach decided to take some of it back. Miles used his session at the SEC media days to apologize for using an expletive when describing the Tigers' renewed rivalry with Alabama before a signing-day gathering of LSU boosters. After going head to head in several recruiting battles with Alabama's Nick Saban, who was his predecessor at LSU, Miles reportedly told a group of Tigers fans, "We now have a new rival in ... Alabama." The comment fueled speculation of a Miles-Saban rift. It doesn't help that fans continue to suggest that Miles has been winning big the past two seasons ?- he's 22-4 ?- with Saban's players. "At the end of a recruiting season, when there was some hearsay and innuendo, I had an emotional reaction," Miles said. "I regret any choice of words that I made. I am in no way trying to be derogatory towards Alabama. I look forward to competing with Alabama and their head coach." Later, Miles also called out Southern Cal, the preseason No. 1 pick in most polls, because he felt SEC teams have a tougher time getting to the BCS championship game. "I'd like nothing more than to play USC for the [national] title," Miles said at a function in New Orleans. "I'll tell you this: They have a much easier road to travel." Miles insists that he wasn't criticizing the Pac-10 but praising the SEC. "I don't feel like I called out USC in any way," he said. "I was just sticking up for the quality of the SEC. I just think it's easier to [get to the BCS championship] from a conference that does not have a championship game."

Notre Dame In Talks For Game At Reliant Stadium

Jul 2, 2014 8:12 AM

Officials from Lone Star Sports & Entertainment have held preliminary talks with Notre Dame about bringing a football game to Reliant Stadium. ?It?s all very preliminary,? said David Brady, director of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. ?We?ve at least opened the dialogue. We?ve talked to them about their future schedule and the potential of a game here.? Notre Dame plans to schedule a football game each season at neutral sites starting in 2009. Notre Dame would be designated the "home" team in any game played in Houston. No exact year has been targeted during the early stages of talks, but a team "with local appeal" -- likely from the Big 12 or Conference USA -- could be a possible opponent. Houston "is certainly in the mix,? said John Heisler, Notre Dame?s associate athletics director. ?We?ve said from day one that Texas and Florida are two states that we?re the most interested in.? Notre Dame will play games ? against yet-to-be-determined opponents -- at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., in 2011 and 2014. The Fighting Irish also will play Washington State in San Antonio?s Alamodome on Oct. 31, 2009, and are in discussion with Baylor about playing at the Dallas Cowboys? new stadium in Arlington in 2012. Heisler said no agreement has been signed with Baylor, but that discussions are ?pretty well along? and a deal is imminent.

Ian Johnson's Wedding To Have Security After Racial Threats

Oct 23, 2014 2:25 AM

A Boise State University running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, has hired security for his weekend wedding because of racial threats, a newspaper reported Tuesday. Ian Johnson, who is black, and his fiance, Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise. A report on the letters and phone calls that Johnson has received was carried in an Idaho Statesman sports column. Johnson, 21, from San Dimas, Calif., ran into the end zone on a so-called "Statue of Liberty" play to score the winning two-point conversion as underdog BSU beat the Oklahoma Sooners 43-42 in overtime on Jan. 1. The Broncos ended their season 13-0 and wound up ranked No. 5 in the final AP poll.

Notre Dame's Weis Loses Malpractice Lawsuit

Oct 24, 2014 7:54 PM

A jury found against Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis on Tuesday in his malpractice lawsuit against two doctors he claimed botched his care after he had gastric bypass surgery five years ago. The jury deliberated for less than half a day before finding Massachusetts General Hospital surgeons Charles Ferguson and Richard Hodin were not negligent. Weis, 51, who won three Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, accused the surgeons of negligence, saying they allowed him to bleed internally for 30 hours before performing a second surgery to correct the complication.

Hurricanes Could Use Both QB's

Apr 13, 2014 3:32 PM

For five days this summer, University of Miami coach Randy Shannon wasn't asked a single question about the Hurricanes' unsettled quarterback situation. "It was nice," Shannon said Monday. Interest in the battle between Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman isn't high in European cities such as Geneva, Zurich or Paris where Shannon spent part of a three-week vacation recently. But there was no escaping the issue on Monday when Shannon met with media members at the annual ACC Football Kickoff meetings. As he has repeated since spring practice, Shannon said a starter would not be named until the Tuesday before the season opener against Marshall on Sept. 1. But for the first time, Shannon brought up the possibility that he might use both quarterbacks in games no matter who was named the starter. Wright is considered the more accurate passer and has a better arm but lacks Freeman's ability to scramble and make plays when his protection breaks down. Wright, a senior, started 21 straight games before sustaining a season-ending thumb injury last year. Freeman, a junior, started UM's final four games and led the Hurricanes to an MPC Computers Bowl win against Nevada. "There's a chance," Shannon said of a possible quarterback rotation. "If we have to use both of them to win games, we'll do it."

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden doesn't believe college football players have changed a lot since his first head coaching job in 1959. The parents have, though. "Parents have quit raising their children. We need to do a better job of staying with our children and raising them," Bowden said during Saturday night's College Football Hall of Fame enshrinement dinner.

Irish To Play 2009 "Home Game" In Alamodome

Oct 23, 2014 2:25 AM

Notre Dame will leave the shadow of "Touchdown Jesus" to defend the Alamo for one day in 2009. Notre Dame announced Friday that it will host Washington State in San Antonio's Alamodome on October 31, 2009. The contest marks the first in an annual series of off-site "home" games for the Fighting Irish, who evidently want to branch out to their national fan base. Notre Dame AD Kevin White was thrilled to see his original plan for off-site home games come to fruition with Friday's announcement.
