Prosecutors Leaning Against Charges For Ray McDonald

Nov 18, 2014 8:36 PM

Santa Clara County prosecutors are leaning against charging Ray McDonald with domestic violence in connection with his widely publicized arrest on suspicion of roughing up his pregnant fiancee, sources familiar with the case said Thursday.

McDonald's supporters have long insisted that the defensive end is a gentle giant who was merely putting up mild resistance Aug. 31 to ward off a physical attack by his fiancee. In late May, the woman grabbed a gun during an argument the couple had and left the house when McDonald threatened to call police. Officers responded to the call, but no arrests were made.

Aldon Smith Could Get Reduced Suspension

Oct 28, 2014 7:03 AM

Aldon Smith could receive a reduced suspension for good behavior.

Smith was suspended by the NFL for nine games before the season started under terms of the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies. The San Francisco 49ers could get Smith back one or two games earlier.

Smith must maintain his good behavior for commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce the penalty.

Under terms of his suspension, the league has allowed Smith to be in the team's facility for meetings and conditioning, although he has not been allowed to practice with the team.

A reduction to Smith's suspension would not set a precedent, as other players, including Ben Roethlisberger and Brandon Marshall, have had similar suspensions reduced.

Vontaze Burfict Fined $25,000 For Twisting Ankles

Oct 19, 2014 6:57 AM

Vontaze Burfict has been fined $25,000 for twisting the ankles of Cam Newton and Greg Olsen in Week 6.

"In instances like that that are so clearly premeditated, that he had in his mind that if he had those opportunities that he was going to try to attack guys' legs, but guys who are coming off ankle problems specifically, there's no room for it," Olsen said Monday, per The Charlotte Observer. "And I think the punishment needs to go beyond a fine. Guys like that don't learn from that stuff. He's been fined 100 times for head-hunting, and he did it to (receiver) Kelvin (Benjamin) again. You watch the film; it's just what he is."

Angelo: NFL Failed To Act In 'Hundreds' Of Domestic Abuse Cases

Oct 12, 2014 8:31 AM

The failed to take action in “hundreds and hundreds” of domestic abuse cases, said former Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo during his three decades in the league.

“I made a mistake,” Angelo told USA Today. “I was human. I was part of it. I'm not proud of it.''

According to the report, Angelo said he would make sure no one was injured when informed of domestic abuse allegations and then quietly move on.

The most serious legal trouble to entangle the Bears during Angelo’s tenure was a series of weapons charges against defensive tackle Tank Johnson. There were no publicly revealed domestic violence cases involving the Bears during his reign and he didn’t share any specifics in the story.

“We knew it was wrong,” he told the newspaper. “For whatever reason, it just kind of got glossed over. I'm no psychiatrist, so I can't really get into what that part of it is. I'm just telling you how I was. I've got to look at myself first. And I was part of that, but I didn't stand alone.''

Adrian Peterson To Stand Trial Beginning Dec. 1

Oct 10, 2014 3:31 AM

Adrian Peterson will tentatively stand trial on a felony child abuse charge on Dec. 1.

Peterson did not enter a plea to the charge. Hardin's spokeswoman said Tuesday that the running back had planned to plead not guilty if he was asked to enter a plea on Wednesday.

Peterson's case might begin in November if another case falls off the docket.

Peterson has said he never intended to harm his 4-year-old son by spanking him with a tree branch earlier this year. Prosecutor Phil Grant declined to comment Tuesday on whether the case could be settled without a trial.

If he is convicted, he could face six months to two years in state prison, though he could be placed on probation as a first-time offender.
