Vernon Davis: I Wasn't Really Involved In 49ers' 2014 Offense

Jun 18, 2015 2:19 PM

Vernon Davis figures to be more involved in the San Francisco 49ers' offense in 2015.

"Whenever I'd run, like, my deep over routes, there was a safety sitting over there already," Davis said. "It was just game planning. And nothing really ever opened up. But I wasn't really ever a factor in the offense last year. ... The first game, yeah. But the second game, the tight ends (weren't) really involved as a whole."

San Francisco's new offensive coordinator is Geep Chryst, who had served as the team's quarterbacks coach for the last four seasons under Jim Harbaugh. Chryst has a history as a tight ends coach.

Eric Reid Considered Retirement This Offseason

Jun 10, 2015 2:03 AM

Eric Reid contemplated retirement this offseason despite being just 23 and finishing his second NFL season.

Reid has suffered three concussions in his first two seasons.

“Everybody evaluates their own situation as far as playing this game,” Reid said to The Chronicle. “I’ve evaluated mine and I’ve decided I still want to play.”

Reid said he might seek out more medical advice, but he intends to play in 2015. He has been a full participant in the team’s offseason program.

“There is a doctor that I’m looking further into and I may end up going to see,” Reid said. “Like I said, right now I’ve evaluated my situation and I feel comfortable playing.”

49ers Committed To Deep Ball On Offense In 2015

Jun 9, 2015 6:49 PM

The San Francisco 49ers hope to have an offense dedicated to making big plays downfield in 2015.

"Vernon is stretching the field," Jim Tomsula said Tuesday said of tight end Vernon Davis. "Vernon looks extremely fast. Catching the ball really well. Again, the next three days, I’d rather you watch it then me talk a lot about it because you’ll have the opportunity to see it.”

Torrey Smith, the team's most prominent free-agent acquisition, caught 213 passes, scored 30 touchdowns and averaged 16.9 yards a reception in four years with Baltimore. Last year that average dropped to 15.7 yards a catch, but he also scored 11 touchdowns.

The 49ers believe the downfield threat will also create more room for their running backs, as well as Anquan Boldin for the intermediate throws.

Colin Kaepernick believes he's now more accurate than he's ever been.

"It's something that we've (the 49ers) worked on more, too," he said. "We added the weapons to go down down the field. That's something we've got more reps at, we've gotten more comfortable with. Hopefully, that carries over."

Browns Trade For Andy Lee From 49ers

Jun 6, 2015 6:44 PM

The Cleveland Browns have traded for Andy Lee from the San Francisco 49ers.

The Browns traded a seventh-round pick in 2017 for the rights to Lee and released Lanning. Lee is a three-time Pro Bowler who was no longer in the 49ers' plans after the team drafted Clemson punter Bradley Pinion in the fifth round.

"For the last 11 years, Andy has been a tremendous representative of the 49ers organization both on the field and in the community," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "While he may be best known for his production on the field, we have come to know Andy as a great teammate and family man. We would like to thank Andy for his commitment to this organization, while wishing him and his family continued success throughout his career and beyond."

Anthony Davis Retires From NFL At 25

Jun 6, 2015 6:45 PM

Anthony Davis won't play football in 2015 despite being just 25 years old.

With Pro Bowl guard Mike Iupati defecting to the Cardinals, the 49ers have lost both of their first-round picks from the 2010 NFL Draft.

"After a few years of thought, I've decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won't understand my decision, that's ok.

"I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. I'm simply doing what's best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life."

Although the wording suggests a sabbatical, a statement released by the 49ers reads that Davis has "informed the team he plans to retire" from the NFL.

Davis missed four games last season following a concussion.
