49ers' OC: Colin Kaepernick Didn't Regress In 2014

Jul 28, 2015 10:44 AM

Geep Chryst does not believe Colin Kaepernick regressed during the 2014 season.

In what became the final season of Jim Harbaugh's tenure as head coach, Kaepernick had a career high in passing yards and his completion percentage improved but he threw more interceptions, fewer touchdowns and also took 13 more sacks.

"Last year, you're playing with some different sets of challenges," Chryst said, via the San Jose Mercury News. "There was more change within the offensive line than he had experienced the last couple of years. How does that affect your production as a quarterback? You're behind more often in games. How does that affect your production as a quarterback? I cite the fact that we had six touchdowns nullified by penalty. You plug that back into his formula, he really wasn't ... he didn't regress off his line as much as perceived."

Mike Holmgren Had Interest In 49ers' Job

Jul 27, 2015 3:02 PM

Mike Holmgren admitted he had interest in the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching opening.

"This last December, after the season, I had a couple of chances, and almost took one of them, and then realized that, 'What am I doing?'" Holmgren told Eisen. "You know, I'd be traveling across the country and my grandkids are all in Seattle, and my life is really good but I had the bug still, and then I told my agent, 'You know, the one I'd really kind of like to do is San Francisco,' and so they reached out to the 49ers and essentially, I got the call back saying, 'Nah, we're going with a younger guy.'"

The 49ers promoted Jim Tomsula to head coach in January to replace Jim Harbaugh. Tomsula is 47, 20 years younger than Holmgren.

"I probably needed to hear that because you get your ego stroked and you're flattered when people call you and you kind of get into a place where I'm not sure you're making great decisions," Holmgren said. "But when I heard that, I said, 'OK, I needed to hear that and now I'm going onto other things.'"

Holmgren went 161-111 in 17 seasons as an NFL head coach.

York Compares 49ers' Coaching Change To Warriors Hiring Steve Kerr

Jul 22, 2015 10:35 AM

Jed York has compared replacing Jim Harbaugh with Jim Tomsula to the Golden State Warriors' decision last year to fire Mark Jackson and eventually hire Steve Kerr. The Warriors went on to win the 2015 NBA championship, while the San Francisco 49ers are expected to take a step back in 2015.

"Culture is huge. That's the difference between a championship-caliber team and a championship team," York told The MMQB's Emily Kaplan. "You look at the Golden State Warriors. They were the dumbest team in the NBA for letting Mark Jackson go, who won the most games in the franchise's history. How could you be so dumb? They bring in Steve Kerr, who has been around the game for a long period of time but has never coached before. Kerr changes the culture, comes in with a different perspective, and look what happens."

Warner: 49ers Shouldn't Design Runs For Kaepernick

Jul 14, 2015 12:48 PM

Kurt Warner has been working with Colin Kaepernick this offseason and he believes the San Francisco 49ers would be best served by not using him on designed runs.

Warner said Kaepernick should only run when there's not a pass option from the pocket.

Kaepernick averaged 39.9 yards per game last season on 6.5 attempts, up from 32.8 and 5.8 in 2013. During the 49ers' two playoff runs with Kaepernick, he averaged 88.0 and 81.0 yards per game rushing respectively in 2012 and 2013.

Marcus Lattimore: Every Day Of Rehab Was Hell

Jul 8, 2015 8:23 PM

Marcus Lattimore was surprised the San Francisco 49ers drafted him given his lengthy injury history.

Lattimore never played a down in the NFL as he was unable to successfully rehab his knee.

"I mean, why would you take a running back with two horrible knee injuries?" Lattimore said, wondering about his own fourth-round draft slot in 2013. “I did pretty good, I played good in college, but if I’m a GM I don’t think I would do it."

Lattimore retired from the NFL on Nov. 5, 2014.

"I went out there and put a smile a smile on my face like everything was alright," Lattimore said about his time with the 49ers in a recent interview with SB Nation. "But it was hell. Every day."
