The San Francisco 49ers have not drafted a true 3-4 defensive lineman since the 2009 NFL Draft.
Justin Smith has been the 49ers' anchor on their defensive line though he is already 33.
Ricky Jean Francois will start at Smith's spot in Week 17. Francois was a seven round selection in 2009.
Justin Smith has a partially torn triceps, according to a report from the Sacramento Bee.
Without Smith for the majority of the past six quarters, San Francisco has allowed 66 points and 753 yards to opposing offenses.
The 49ers have listed Smith's injury as related to his elbow.
The following players have been voted to the 2012 Pro Bowl.

Colin Kaepernick had a QB rating of 103.6 when not pressured in the San Francisco 49ers' loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
But when Seattle was able to pressure Kaepernick, his QB rating was zero. Kaepernick was 2-for-9 for six yards in those situations.
Mario Manningham tore his ACL and PCL in his left knee during the San Francisco 49ers' loss on Sunday to the Seahawks.
Manningham is the 49ers' third leading receiver.
Manningham was tackled low by Leroy Hill.
Colin Kaepernick has a 145.1 passer rating when targeting Delanie Walker. Kaepernick is 8-for-11 for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Michael Crabtree has been excellent on the receiving end of Kaepernick as well, catching 29 of 44 targets for 358 yards and three touchdowns.
Vernon Davis has been targeted 17 times, with 10 catches for 112 yards.
Dashon Goldson has been fined $21,000 for an illegal hit on Aaron Hernandez.
Goldson plans to appeal his latest fine.
"I don't have time to sit there and dictate in the timespan I have as a football player when I'm on the football field to dictate what's a clean and what's a not-so-clean hit," Goldson said. "I'm not a dirty player. And that's just that."
Aaron Rodgers believes Alex Smith has played well enough to be an NFL starter again next season.
Smith and Rodgers were each members of the 2005 NFL Draft.
“He comes in, he’s (got a) 70 percent completion (percentage), he’s (got a) 100-plus quarterback rating," said Rodgers. "Last year, he’s like barely over one percent interception percentage,” Rodgers said. “He’s a great quarterback, he just needs to go somewhere he gets appreciated for the skills he has and hopefully he gets a chance next year.”
Vernon Davis and Colin Kaepernick are still working on developing their chemistry.
Davis caught six balls for 83 yards and a touchdown in Kaepernick's first start, but Davis has received far fewer targets since.
“You have to develop that chemistry, that bond so you can be on the same page,” Davis said. “That’s something me and Kap don’t have right now. We don’t have it. You have to expect it because he just stepped in. Me and Alex, we’ve been here.
“It took some time for me and Alex to get like that. In the beginning, Alex would overthrow me, he would underthrow me. We had to build that chemistry that he could trust that I’m going in that spot that I needed to be. That’s something that me and Kap don’t have right now, but we’re working on it.”
Davis believes Kaepernick is adjusting to his speed.
“Just working on some of the deep throws, like the ones you saw in the game, we work on it,” Davis said. “Because in practice, he would overthrow me. I think he’s just kind of scared of my speed a little bit. He doesn’t really know it. We don’t have that timing, but it will come, just like any quarterback and wide receiver. It takes time.”
