Tomsula Denies Campaigning For Harbaugh's Job

Feb 20, 2015 2:08 PM

Jim Harbaugh suggested in an interview last week that Jim Tomsula campaigned for the job of San Francisco 49ers' head coach.

“First of all, there’s nothing to that, and it’s ridiculous, OK?” Tomsula said, per CSNBayArea.com. “Second of all, if anybody needs to talk, just give me a buzz, OK? That’s all.”

Tomsula was long considered a probable candidate to replace Harbaugh.

Tomsula said he did not think things ended badly with Harbaugh.

“No, not at all,” Tomsula said, per the Sacramento Bee. “To me? No, Jim Harbaugh and his staff, which I was part of, won a lot of football games for the San Francisco 49ers. He did a great job. There's no disputing any of that. I don't have a negative word to say about any of that.

“I guess that's where I'm at with that. I don't see where there's something (negative) there. Don't see it.”

Baalke: Jim Harbaugh Always Wanted To Coach Michigan

Feb 18, 2015 12:18 PM

Trent Baalke claims Jim Harbaugh always had interest in becoming head coach at Michigan.

"The head coach at the University of Michigan is a heck of a football job," Baalke said Wednesday at the NFL combine, "and I know that's something he's always wanted to do."

Harbaugh recently disputed the notion that his parting with the San Francisco 49ers was a mutual decision.

"I was told I wouldn't be the coach anymore," Harbaugh said in the interview. "I wasn't going to put the 49ers in a position where they had a coach they didn't want anymore.

"That's the truth of it. I didn't leave the 49ers, I felt like the 49er hierarchy left me."

"I have no response to that," Baalke said. "Jim's moved on, we've moved on. He's got a heck of a job, and we've got a new football coach, and we're trying to get ready for the draft, free agency and the offseason."

Frank Gore and the San Francisco 49ers have "engaged in contract discussions."

Gore is set for free agency in the first time of his career and wasn't sure if the 49ers were interested in re-signing him.

Gore wants to remain a 1,000-yard running back in 2015 while competing for a Super Bowl.

Frank Gore Seeks Super Bowl Contender, Lead Back Duties

Feb 16, 2015 1:56 PM

Frank Gore is scheduled to become a free agent on March 10 for the first time of his career.

“I know the fans love me,” he wrote on his Instagram account Sunday, “but I need to know if the management does but I’m going to love my fans no matter what.”

A source close to Gore says he wants another 1,000 yard season while playing for a Super bowl contender.

Gore would need to be the 49ers’ lead running back to gain 1,000 yards. He earned nearly $6.5 million in each of the last two seasons.

49ers Offered Adam Gase Head Coach Job If He Hired Tomsula As DC

Feb 16, 2015 9:17 PM

The San Francisco 49ers were interested in hiring Adam Gase as head coach, but they made naming Jim Tomsula defensive coordinator a condition of his potential employment.

Gase refused the proposition and the 49ers hired Tomsula as head coach.

The 49ers then offered Gase the job of offensive coordinator, but he instead took the same job with the Chicago Bears under John Fox.

Albert Breer of NFL.com reports Gase offered to keep Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator or to hire Vance Joseph from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Alex Smith Still Surprised By 49ers' Regime Change

Feb 15, 2015 3:07 PM

Alex Smith was shocked by the regime change of the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers parted ways with Jim Harbaugh and promoted Jim Tomsula to head coach.

"I think for me, it's still just tough to believe all those guys are gone, all that turnover," Smith said, via the San Jose Mercury News. "... There were a lot of ballgames that got won over the last few years, but for whatever reason, they couldn't make it work. I don't know. I wish coach Tomsula well. I wish him the best."

Smith was the starting quarterback of the 49ers when Tomsula was interim head coach in 2010.

"I loved what he brought to the team that week," Smith said. "I know he has the ability to be a head coach. He's a good man, a really good coach. I'm pulling for him."

Jim Harbaugh Was Told By 49ers He Wouldn't Return In 2015

Feb 13, 2015 6:47 PM

Jim Harbaugh said his departure from the San Francisco 49ers actually wasn't mutual.

Harbaugh quickly became head coach of Michigan after Week 17.

“I was told I wouldn’t be the coach any more,” Harbaugh said. “And then . . . you can call it ‘mutual,’ I mean, I wasn’t going to put the 49ers in the position to have a coach that they didn’t want any more. But that’s the truth of it. I didn’t leave the 49ers. I felt like the 49er hierarchy left me.”

Harbaugh also confirmed that he was told he wouldn’t be returning on the Monday after a Week 15 loss to the Seahawks. He opted not to leave at that point.

“I wanted to finish what I started — what we started,” Harbaugh said.  “And I have great fond memories of it.”
