Manning Restructures Contract To Give Colts Cap Room

Oct 21, 2014 4:31 PM

Peyton Manning has agreed to restructure his contract with the Indianapolis Colts to save the team nearly $8 million in salary-cap space. The Super Bowl MVP was to receive a multi-million-dollar roster bonus during the offseason but by converting the money into a regular signing bonus, the Colts can prorate that amount over the remaining four years of his deal. That saves Indianapolis space under the cap, which is $109 million. The restructuring was disclosed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed. Colts spokesman Craig Kelley said the team had no comment.

Colts Designate Freeny Their Franchise Player

Feb 7, 2014 6:48 AM

The Indianapolis Colts made defensive end Dwight Freeney their franchise player, keeping him with the Super Bowl champions for at least one more season while they work on a long-term contract. Freeney, a first-round draft pick in 2002, missed the Pro Bowl this year for the first time since his rookie season. He was held to a career-low 5? sacks while fighting shoulder and leg injuries. Still, the Colts were not going to let him get away. "He wasn't going to go anywhere," team president Bill Polian said. "There's no timeline, but we're still talking (to his agent) with the idea of putting together a longer deal. He's a key part of our team."

Dungy Coming Back To Coach Super Bowl Champs

Apr 2, 2014 1:09 AM

Tony Dungy is coming back for another season with the Super Bowl champs. Dungy made it clear Monday that he will return to the Colts sideline, quashing any talk that he might step down after becoming the first black coach to win a Super Bowl ring. "Obviously, you want to come back. You want to defend the title. We've got such a great group of guys, that that's eventually what draws you back every year," Dungy said in advance of the NFL Scouting Combine. "I wouldn't say it was an easy decision, but it was the right one, and it didn't take overly long to make."

How do you spell Scott Wiese? In a few weeks, that'd be P-e-y-t-o-n M-a-n-n-i-n-g. Wiese, a die-hard fan of the Bears, signed a pledge in front of a crowd at a Decatur bar last Friday night that if the Bears lost Sunday's Super Bowl, he'd change his name to that of the man who led the Colts to victory. Final Score: Colts 29, Bears 17. So on Tuesday, Wiese went to the Macon County Courts Facility and started the process of changing his name.

Colts Parade Through Indy, Rally At RCA Dome

Oct 10, 2014 11:39 PM

The RCA Dome never felt so good to the Super Bowl champion Colts. After a rain-soaked victory in Miami the night before and then a frigid, bone-numbing homecoming parade through the streets of downtown Indianapolis on Monday night, the Colts finally arrived at the stadium for a raucous celebration with their fans. More than 40,000 of them, just as loud and boisterous as they were when the Colts left the Dome two weeks earlier with the AFC championship, welcomed them home, reveling in the city's first major professional sports championship in more than 30 years.
