Harrison Likely To Play On Sunday

Sep 3, 2014 12:31 AM

Wide receiver Marvin Harrison likely will return to the Indianapolis Colts' starting lineup for the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals. Running back Edgerrin James might get the day off. Harrison missed last week's 28-13 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a broken bone in his right hand that he hurt against San Diego two weeks ago. After missing practice last week and sitting out Wednesday and Thursday this week, it was beginning to look like he wouldn't be back until the Colts' first playoff game in two weeks. But Harrison was able to go through limited drills Friday. "The hand is pretty good. It reminds me of earlier in the year when I hurt my wrist," Harrison said after Friday's practice. "Today I wanted to get out here and practice. Not necessarily for the game Sunday but practice in preparations for the first playoff game."

Dungy Rejoins Colts On Thursday

Jul 10, 2014 10:19 PM

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy rejoined his team Thursday, a week after his oldest son's death of an apparent suicide. Dungy is expected to be on the sideline Sunday when the Colts (13-2) host Arizona in the regular-season finale. He met briefly with players and coaches Thursday and thanked them for their support since his 18-year-old son, James, was found unresponsive in his Tampa-area apartment Dec. 22. He was pronounced dead at University Community Hospital. Dungy took the team plane from Indianapolis to Tampa, Fla., where he had coached the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001. James Dungy's funeral was Tuesday, but his father had not said when he would return to the Colts. "It was good to see him back," said Colts offensive guard/tackle Jake Scott. "I think it's probably good for him. It's kind of back to normal, having him here out there to run the scout teams, organizing practice and the walkthroughs." Dungy was scheduled to direct Thursday afternoon's practice.

Entire Colts Team To Attend Funeral

Nov 22, 2014 10:56 PM

Jim Caldwell is keeping things in perspective now that he's taken over as coach of the Indianapolis Colts while Tony Dungy deals with the death of his son. "This game is secondary to life itself and, obviously, there are a lot more important things than this," the assistant head coach said Friday. "But sometimes life throws you a curveball, and you have to adjust." Colts owner Jim Irsay will charter a plane to take the entire team, including players and staff, to the funeral of James Dungy, 18. Colts players wore "JD" decals on the back of their helmets for Saturday's game in Seattle, won by the Seahawks 28-13. James Dungy's viewing Monday and funeral Tuesday, at Wilson Funeral Home in Tampa, Fla., are open to the public, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Dungy Death Ruled A Suicide

Oct 6, 2014 4:33 PM

James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead of an apparent suicide early Thursday, the sheriff's office said. James Dungy's girlfriend found him when she returned to the Campus Lodge Apartments at about 1:30 a.m., Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. "Based on evidence at the scene, indications are that this death appears to be a suicide," Carter said. She said an autopsy was pending. Dungy wasn't breathing when he was found, Carter said. A sheriff's deputy performed CPR before an ambulance took him to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Tony Dungy took the team plane from Indianapolis to Tampa, Fla., where he had coached the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001.

Dungy Leaves Team After Son's Death

James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead in a Tampa-area apartment, police said Thursday. No foul play is suspected, but a cause of death won't be announced pending an autopsy, said Vida Morgan, a secretary in the Hillsborough County sheriff's office. James Dungy's girlfriend found him when she returned to the Campus Lodge Apartments in Lutz, Fla., the sheriff's office said in a news release on its Web site. Police responded at 1:32 a.m. Thursday and performed CPR on Dungy before he was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa. The Colts (13-1) are at Seattle on Saturday, and team president Bill Polian said that assistant head coach Jim Caldwell has taken over for Dungy.

Eight Colts Named To Pro Bowl

Apr 15, 2014 5:53 PM

The team with the NFL?s best record has reaped some compensation. The Indianapolis Colts, who will take a 13-1 record into Saturday?s game at Seattle, landed more than half a dozen players on the AFC Pro Bowl squad today. First-time selections are center Jeff Saturday, linebacker Cato June and safety Bob Sanders. They join quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receiver Marvin Harrison, running back Edgerrin James and defensive end Dwight Freeney. Among the players left off the team were wide receiver Reggie Wayne, whose 81 receptions are second and 1,034 yards third among AFC wide receivers, and special-teams standout Robert Mathis. The game pitting the best players from each conference is Feb. 12 in Honolulu. Sanders? selection comes in his second year, and first as a full-time starter. He?s the first Colts? defensive back to be selected for the Pro Bowl since 1971 when Bob Vogel and Rich Volk were honored. ?I really didn?t expect it, man,?? Sanders said. ?I really don?t know how to feel right now. I know my parents are really excited for me. ?It?s an honor, a great honor.?? June echoed Sanders? sentiments. Coach Tony Dungy informed the team of its Pro Bowl representation during a morning practice. ?They announced all the guys that made the Pro Bowl, and my name popped up on the list,?? June said. ?It was exciting.?? Freeney?s selection was his third straight. ?It never gets old,?? he said.

Diem To Sit Last Two Regular Season Games

Feb 9, 2014 6:05 PM

When coach Tony Dungy acknowledged on Sunday that he would use "all" of the Indianapolis Colts' roster in the final two games of the regular season, he might not have been speaking just in the abstract. A spate of late-season injuries, the most serious to starting right offensive tackle Ryan Diem, will force the Colts coach to mine the resources of his depth chart for Saturday's road game at Seattle and a home game against Arizona on New Year's Day. The injury to Diem will mean a reshuffled offensive line, perhaps even for the playoffs. A five-year veteran who has started all 14 regular-season games, Diem suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Sunday's loss to San Diego, and he will miss at least the final two games of the year. Such sprains typically do not dictate surgery but do require about a month of treatment and rest.

Simon And June Likely To Sit

Jul 12, 2014 7:29 AM

In a normal week, Corey Simon and Cato June might actually play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. This week, the availability of the nicked-up defenders is being debated by Colts coaches. By clinching a third straight AFC South title, first-round bye and home-field advantage through the playoffs, coach Tony Dungy sees no reason to risk his hurting defensive starters to additional injuries -- not even perfection. Instead, Dungy believes it's more important to let some key players rest, relax and recover. "That's one of the luxuries we have now," he said. "We don't have to put them back in if they're not close to 100 percent."
