Glover Quin Investing 70 Percent Of His NFL Salary

Oct 27, 2016 12:56 PM

Glover Quin is a Pro Bowl safety with the Detroit Lions and he's saving 70 percent of his take-home each season to invest in well-known, publicly traded companies.

Quin and his family lived on the remaining 30 percent, approximately $6,000 per month and $72,000 per year over the first three seasons of his career.

Occasionally, Quin had a higher budget if he got what he called “unaccounted-for” money for doing an appearance that wasn’t planned. He and his wife would use that money on vacations and other potential luxuries they didn’t initially budget for. Other than that, it was always about the plan.

“I’ve always trusted in the plan and never really let other people sway me away from it,” said Quin, now a safety on the Detroit Lions. “I like to call it tunnel vision. It’s not good to have tunnel vision on the field, because you need to know what’s going on around you, but when you’re in life, especially in this field, you need to have tunnel vision, because you see so many guys around you buying cars, buying jewelry, doing this, spending money, talking about the money that they spend.

“And you’re sitting there like, ‘Man, I’m living off this much money every month, and this cat spending this much money every day.'"

When his contract expires after the 2017 season, Quin will have earned more than $21 million, before taxes, in his eight-year career. Quin estimates that his private portfolio could match the money he's made in the NFL.

Jim Bob Cooter: Matthew Stafford Even Better Without Calvin Johnson

Oct 14, 2016 7:45 AM

Matthew Stafford is playing without Calvin Johnson, but is putting up some of the best numbers of his career.

"I think he's a growing and developing quarterback, so yes, I do think he was better than he was the last year, two years ago, three years ago," Jim Bob Cooter said.

"Hopefully we're all getting better every year. I think he falls into that category too. But I think he's doing a really good job with what we're asking him to do and so are the receivers, tight ends and backs."

Through five games, Stafford is on pace for the best completion percentage (68.0), passer rating (99.6) and QBR (66.4) of his career.

"He's really just trying to throw it to the open guy. It's as simple as that. It sounds overly simple, but it's a really big deal," Cooter said. "You know, when you have Calvin Johnson out there, one of the all-time great receivers, going to the Hall of Fame as soon as you can get him in there, it makes a lot of sense to try and throw that guy the ball. Sometimes you might override your read to do that.

"Sometimes it's easier for a quarterback [when] you have your reads, you have your progressions, you have your thought processes and you just go around throwing it to who gets open. He's doing a good job of doing that."

Justin Forsett Agrees To Sign With Lions

Oct 11, 2016 2:10 PM

Justin Forsett has agreed to sign with the Detroit Lions.

Forsett asked for his release from the Baltimore Ravens after losing carries to Terrance West.

The Lions lost Ameer Abdullah for the season with a foot injury and Forsett gives them depth at running back.

Forsett is averaging just 3.2 yards per carry this season.

Golden Tate Says Struggles Are Mental, Lions Expect Big Week

Oct 7, 2016 8:11 AM

Golden Tate says his current on-field slump is almost all mental.

The Detroit Lions benched Tate for a majority of the second half in Week 4. The wide receiver is marred in the worst three-game stretch of his career.

"There's multiple things, I think," Tate said. "I think it's all between my ears, it's all in my head -- how I perceive different situations, myself at times, and even others. I think at the end of the day I need to control what I can control, and I can control how I show up to work every day. I can control when the ball comes my way, what I do with it, and that's just what I need to focus on.

"That's what I can control."

Jim Caldwell said earlier this week Tate is still a starter for the offense, and he expects big things from him the rest of the season. Jim Bob Cooter expects Tate to begin to break out as soon as this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Golden is and will be a really important player for our offense this year. The ball is getting spread around," Cooter said. "Last week, it really didn't get to enough guys, period. We all wanted to get more catches and get more touches and try and keep the drives going, and we just didn't do it.

"Golden's going to step up and have a huge week this week. I think Golden's going to step up and have a big rest of the year. I'm excited about where he's going from here."

Lions Insist Golden Tate Wasn't Benched

Oct 3, 2016 2:07 PM

Jim Caldwell insists the Detroit Lions didn't bench Golden Tate in their Week 4 game.

Tate sat for much of the Lions' loss to the Bears with Andre Roberts playing in his place.

"We move him around quite a bit," Caldwell said of Tate, via ESPN. "We gave Andre an opportunity. Andre obviously deserves it and it was our plan beforehand. You know, but he came back in. He was back in there and he'll do well."
