Nov 21, 2015 6:57 PM

The Detroit Lions have hired Rod Wood as president.

The Lions also announced they have established an advisory board to search for a new GM. It consists of owner Martha Ford, her four children and Wood. Ford said the advisory board may use specific members of the NFL's Career Development Advisory Panel to help the search.

Detroit fired previous president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew after a 1-7 start to the season.

Sheldon White Knows Lions Must Win To Keep Job As GM

Nov 14, 2015 6:44 PM

Sheldon White knows the Detroit Lions have to start winning immediately if he's going to keep his job as interim general manager.

“We have to win,” White said. “Will I be a candidate (for the GM job full-time)? I can give you the best way to be a candidate is to win games. Obviously, if we don’t, then I won’t be a candidate. But if we win these games and we find ways to get better and improve our roster, maybe I will be.”

White is in his 19th season with the Lions.

“I love the clarity that Mrs. Ford told me,” White said. “She told me she’s hiring me as the interim general manager, but the reality of it is, this isn’t a Supreme Court justice appointment. The only person with a lifetime appointment in this building is our owner, and so the way I look at everybody, we’re all interim general managers, we’re interim coaches, we’re interim players. Eventually, it’ll be over, and we’ll be telling stories.”

Matthew Stafford Confident He Can Play In Any Offensive System

Nov 12, 2015 12:20 PM

Matthew Stafford believes he's talented enough to succeed in any offensive system.

There were questions that the Gulf Coast offense brought in by Joe Lombardi doesn't fit Stafford's strengths.

"I think it's been fine," Stafford said. "I feel like I'm a talented enough guy to do most anything anybody brings in. That's kind of how I feel, I look at myself like that. I don't try to peg myself in any one box or anything like that.

"I try to be as open to new ideas as I possibly can be and understand that I can do whatever coach needs me to do," he continued. "That's the job of a player. I understand at certain points you've got to make known what you like and what you're good at, what you think you're good at. But as far as bringing it in and molding to what I do best, I think it was fine."

Lions Can Cut Matthew Stafford With Small Cap Consequences

Nov 6, 2015 1:31 PM

The Detroit Lions have manageable cap charge if they decide to cut Matthew Stafford this offseason.

Based on the contract extension he signed in 2013, the Lions can release him with a post-June 1 cap charge of $5.5 million in 2016 and $5.5 million in 2017. All teams can designate up to two players as a post-June 1 cap charge, clearing them off the roster before that.

The Lions can also release Stafford without the June 1 designation for a 2016 cap hit of$11 million and he'd be off the books for 2017.

The Lions could also trade Stafford, who may be viewed as a worthwhile reclamation project.

The Detroit Lions have fired general manager Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand.

The Lions reached the playoffs in 2014 but have struggled badly this season.

The dismissals follow the Lions' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in London.

Mayhew replaced Matt Millen as general manager in 2008.
