Cardinals Remove 'Independent Study' Clause From Kyler Murray's Deal

Jul 29, 2022 9:03 AM

The Arizona Cardinals have removed the independent study addendum from Kyler Murray's new contract after it received significant backlash.

"After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract," the Cardinals said in a statement. "It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it's ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract."

The addendum in Murray's contract extension became public on Monday. The clause required the quarterback to study game material for four hours per week on his own to receive "credit."

Murray couldn't study while he was distracted by the TV, internet or video games, the addendum said.

Kyler Murray's Extension Mandates Weekly Film Study

Jul 26, 2022 7:54 AM

The massive extension Kyler Murray signed with the Arizona Cardinals includes an addendum that requires the quarterback to study film for four hours per week during the season.

The clause is labeled "independent study addendum."

According to the contract, Murray will need to study "material provided to him by the Club in order to prepare for the Club's next upcoming game." Murray will receive "credit" for completing his film study, according to the contract.

However, the addendum states the time that Murray spends in mandatory meetings studying does not count and that Murray also won't receive credit if he does not "personally study the provided material in good faith."

Kyler Murray: I Wanted Cardinals Deal 'The Whole Time'

Jul 25, 2022 9:46 AM

Kyler Murray said Friday, a day after agreeing to a huge extension with the Arizona Cardinals, that he's right where he wanted to be.

"My job is to fulfill my promise and bring a championship here. There's no questions about it," Murray said. "There's no other place that I wanted to be this whole time. And I mean that."

The quarterback largely ignored the social media firestorm that started when he deleted all photos related to the Cardinals from his Instagram account after the Pro Bowl.

"All the social media stuff and all that, that's gonna happen regardless," Murray said. "Play good, they love you. Play bad, they hate you.

"It is what it is. That's just this day and age. You gotta have tough skin. So, I've grown up in it. So, it's nothing new."
