Cardinals Not Anticipating Coaching Change

Oct 24, 2014 12:15 AM

Rod Graves, the Cardinals' vice president of football operations, said after the game that he didn't anticipate a coaching change being made. The focus in the upcoming off week will be on how to improve and break the seven-game losing streak. Free safety Robert Griffith said Green shouldn't be blamed for the team's 1-7 record. "It's really embarrassing for us to not win when we should be winning games," he said. "It's not anything he's doing. It's just very unfortunate with the kind of talent we have here that we're not winning." The losing is wearing on everybody, Griffith said, not just Green. "This is my 14th year doing this," he said. "You think I want to go 1-7? (Expletive). It's just frustrating for everybody."

Vermeil Denies Arizona Rumor

Oct 5, 2014 12:25 PM

A rumor popped up this week that Dick Vermeil could be in line to replace Dennis Green as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. "It's not true as far as I know," he said by phone from his 114-acre Chester County spread. "I don't know anything about it. No one's contacted me, nor should they. It's behind me. I don't want to get back into coaching." Even in retirement, Vermeil has a full plate with paid speaking engagements and lots of charity work. "It's going well," he said. "You get caught between doing the things you get paid to do and the charity work that you want to do. All of the things I haven't been able to help with since I've been gone. I'm catching up with those kind of obligations."

Leinart: "Now My Next Job Is To Be A Great Dad"

Oct 25, 2014 6:30 AM

Matt Leinart was a proud father, showing off baby pictures to teammates, as he returned to Cardinals practice Thursday after a day off to attend the birth of his son. The quarterback was with former girlfriend Brynn Cameron, who gave birth to the couple's son, Cole, on Tuesday night, then was given Wednesday off by Cardinals coach Dennis Green to remain with them a bit longer. "It was a great experience," said Leinart, who provided a rare glimpse into the private life that he normally guards closely. "The best thing is we brought a healthy boy into this world. Now my next job is to be a great dad."

Green's Job Safe For Now

Nov 1, 2014 2:36 AM

Michael Bidwill said Monday that the Cardinals do not plan to remove Dennis Green as head coach anytime soon. The team's vice president and general counsel flew to New Orleans for NFL owners meetings after Sunday's 22-9 loss to the winless Oakland Raiders, a performance Bidwill called "unacceptable." Bidwill said he called Green and the Cardinals' Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves and demanded explanations. "What I asked them, frankly, was, 'How in the hell did we get to 1-6?' " Bidwill said. "Close losses don't count. We're 1-6, and we shouldn't be. I wanted to know what we were doing to correct it."

Former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Keith Rowen has filed a grievance with the NFL over the circumstances surrounding his demotion. Team spokesman Mark Dalton confirmed that Rowen had filed a grievance but had no other comment. No date has been set for the case to go before an arbitrator. Coach Dennis Green stripped Rowen, a 23-year NFL coaching veteran, of his offensive coordinator duties on Oct. 17, a few hours after the Cardinals blew a 20-point lead in a 24-23 loss to the Chicago Bears on Oct. 16.

Arizona Radio Station Suggests Trade For Porter

Oct 7, 2014 2:54 PM

An Arizona radio station suggested this week that the Cardinals might look to swap high-priced left tackle Leonard Davis for Jerry Porter, now that wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald could miss four weeks with a hamstring injury. Davis' base salary is $9.2 million this season and he's in the final year of his contract. Any team that trades for him at this stage would have to reduce that base salary with a long-term extension. And Davis' agent, Ryan Tollner, told the Arizona Republic he hasn't even been contacted about a restructured contract.

Warner Considering Retirement

Aug 3, 2014 6:10 PM

After being replaced as starter by rookie quarterback Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner acknowledged he?s considering retirement at the end of the season. ?How can you not?? Warner said Wednesday. Since Warner has a manageable contract, the Cardinals have always thought he would make a good backup for Leinart heading into the next two seasons. But speaking to Sports Illustrated after Sunday?s loss to Kansas City, Warner said that may not work for him. ?I really don?t know if I could be comfortable as a backup quarterback or if I?d go crazy in that role,? Warner said.
