Lions Learn From Russell's Holdout With Raiders?

Sep 30, 2014 10:02 PM

The Lions plan to have a finalized contract, or at least an agreement, in place with whomever they select with the first overall pick. Only the team with the first pick can negotiate with prospects before the draft. Oakland botched their negotiations with JaMarcus Russell two years ago and he held out, which caused him to join the team late. "We saw how much that set back [Russell] a couple years ago," new coach Jim Schwartz said. "That's a tool we have in drafting No. 1. We need to take advantage of every advantage that we have."

Chiefs Draft Choice Will Depend On Lions

Nov 14, 2014 3:55 AM

The Chiefs are hoping that the Lions will take quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick, allowing them to have their pick of defensive players. St. Louis has the second overall pick, and are expected to select a tackle after releasing veteran Orlando Pace. "Certainly the tackle spot we've got to address," St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo said last week. "You've got to build with the linemen first. Offensively and defensively. To me, that's always a focus."

Charles Rogers Jailed For Probation Violation

Sep 30, 2014 10:03 PM

A judge has jailed former Detroit Lions draft pick Charles Rogers for violating probation in a domestic violence case. Court records show the 27-year-old former Michigan State star receiver tested positive for alcohol and falsified records saying he attended Alcoholic Anonymous meetings. A judge in Novi, Michigan, granted Rogers' request Tuesday to leave a diversion program and serve 30 days in the Oakland County jail, with credit for 15 days served. Rogers was the NFL's second overall pick in 2003. The Lions signed him to a six-year, US$55-million deal, but injuries sidelined him most of his first two seasons. He was cut in 2006.

Aikman: Stafford Is 'Excited' About Detroit

May 11, 2014 8:35 AM

Troy Aikman said on Sunday that Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford is "genuinely excited" about the possibilty of playing for the Lions. "To me, the best part about it is, Matt wants to go to Detroit, which is really great," Aikman said. "I don't think anybody's had to coach him on that. I dont think anybody's had to say, 'Hey, look, it probably would be in your best interest to say this is what you want to do.' I think he genuinely is excited about the possibility of going to Detroit and knowing that it would be a challenge to build something." When the Cowboys drafted Aikman first overall out of UCLA in 1989, they were coming off a 1-15 season.
