Schwartz: Detroit's QB Competition Is 'Wide Open'

Oct 23, 2014 8:44 AM

Lions coach Jim Schwartz has yet to decide who will start at quarterback for the team this season. "We're going to do what's best for our club," Schwartz told the Associated Press on Friday. "We're going to do what's best for the guy that we drafted, not what somebody outside of the building says and not what worked best for another player. Every player is different." Daunte Culpepper is starting over rookie Matt Stafford in Friday night's preseason game, but Schwartz insists that the battle is still "wide open."

Stafford Isn't A Lock To Start For Lions

Oct 13, 2014 5:25 AM

Matt Stafford was the first overall pick in April's NFL Draft, but he isn't a lock to start for the Lions. "He's played one preseason game," coach Jim Schwartz told the Detroit Free-Press. "He's played a few snaps. We have a long way to go to decide if anybody's ready or not." Stafford started Saturday's preseason game against the Browns, but Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton were expected to get significant snaps as well. "It's not what you've done in one practice," Schwartz said. "It's not what you've done in one preseason game. It's going to be a body of work."

Calvin Johnson: Stafford 'Ahead Of The Curve'

Aug 5, 2014 9:50 AM

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson believes that rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford is already way ahead of the learning curve. "He's definitely learning play by play," Johnson told the Detroit Free Press. "Every time he throws me the ball, he's learning the places where he can put it that I can get to it." Johnson, one of the NFL's best receivers, has endured a carousel at the quarterback position in Detroit. "He makes throws you don't see an everyday rookie make," Johnson said. "He's way ahead of the curve. ... It seems like the kid came in here and he knew what he was doing right off the bat."

Schwartz Shows Infamous Stafford Party Photos To Teammates

Oct 29, 2014 1:25 AM

The Detroit Lions held their first team meeting of training camp on Saturday morning and it was a long session as head coach Jim Schwartz went over a variety of topics. According to someone who was in the room, Schwartz said that it had been about six weeks since he had seen the players and he wanted them to know more about their head coach as a person. Schwartz then had a PowerPoint presentation on what he did on his summer vacation, showing pictures of he and his family enjoying their time off. At the end, Schwartz said, "I thought I had a fun vacation - until I saw this.'' Schwartz then went back to the PowerPoint to show several now infamous pictures of Matthew Stafford partying with multiple young women. "Yeah, that was pretty funny," said Stafford, who knew something was up. "I knew he was going to do it. As soon as he put up the "Schwartz Family Photos'' I knew it was coming."
